Question about Phase Linear UMP8015 CD Player/Receiver With Detachable Face

1 Answer

Ribbon cable... The face somehow detached from the player and hung loosely before the cable connecting the front panel to the player completely ripped. Can I get a replacement (or repair)?

Re: Ribbon cable...

It would be cheaper to replace the unit. Be more careful next time with your equipment

Detachable face does not work.

Unfortunatley, detachable facias do fail from time to time.

The important thing is to ensure the facia is locking "tightly" to the head unit and making good contact with the copper pins.

If your model facia is not the pin connection type, but has the ribbon cable, then the ribbon cables are easily relaceable (these were a common repair item).

If there is an internal issue with your facia, then have it checked for "dry joints" - this is where over time, a solder joint has dried up and not making proper contact.

Whichever repair is required, always price up a replacement facia first, as this is sometimes cheaper than paying someone to inspect and repair your faulty facia.

I have the same deck. replace the flex ribbon to sub panel. It's a problem with this deck. I've replaced the rear panel ribbon numerous times as well as the front panel ribbon.

Accidently removed the tiny screws behind faceplate

It could just be a plastic clip that broke. Most of the car stereo's ive taken apart only have a thin ribbon of wires that run into the contacts that your face plate connects to.If you actually took screws out of the faceplate then id put them back in and put it back into your stereo and see if it illuminates properly,if it does not then id search on E-BAY or contact pioneer and buy a replacement but most the time it would be cheaper to just buy new stereo. You might want to be more specific with the area you took screws out of,the way im reading it sounds like you unscrewed the screws in the face dock, not the faceplate.Hope this helps.

I am going to replace ribbon cable. How can I connect cable to face?

The Face cover is snapped in, so you need to use a small flat tipped screwdriver  and run it around the black and silver plastic cover, and it should snap off. Take Your Time!

Alot, of the radios have a common problem with the connection from the radio's detachable face. What happens is corrosion builds up on the connectors between the pin and the connector itself. Sometimes you can clean it off with a small file. Also, some KENWOODS with the motorized face are known to have a problem with the ribbon cable connecting the face plate to the main board. The last time I repaired one I called KENWOOD and aquired the cable for about 65 dollars, what the problem is, is the cable is wrapped around a plastic white spindel with a high tension spring and places alot of pressure on the cable from the wear and tear of the face opening and it will cause strange problems such as: turning on and off, some buttons working while others don't, and the display partially turning on and off.

Detachable face

Either the back light lamp is burned out or if it is also a flip face, then you may have a "wire" on the ribbon cable to the flip face that is broken and then you would need to replace the ribbon cable. If it is a flip face then I would strongly suspect that it is the ribbon cable.
