Odor coming from water in my home.

My home is 23 years old. I built my home and it has been my residence ever since it was built. It has 2 full baths, a sink in the kitchen, and 1 sink downstairs in the basement. Last year I decided to change out all my faucets, bath tubs included. There is a Moen faucet in the kitchen, and American Standard in the 2 baths and downstairs. In the sink faucet in the master bedroom, when turning the water on, if it has been over 30 to 45 minutes, there is a strong sulfer smell for 45 seconds to 1 minute. Then it will clear up and be oderless. This is the only faucet that does this in the entire house. It is not the first in line with the water inlet, in fact it is the 5th in line. I didn't have this problem before I changed the faucets, and do not have a problem with any of the other ones. I know I can fix this by putting a charcoal filter on that one faucet. My question is what is different on that faucet that makes it have the odor after I changed the faucet???.......

SOURCE: Moen Bath Tub Faucet

Hi varn4620,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You had to replace the faucet in the tub due to a broken plastic piece in valve stem. Bought a Moen ripped the wall out and put new faucet in. Went good untill we turned the water on and the shower rained on us. Tightened everything you could find to tighten .Every time the water is turned on the shower rains. Can this be fixed or is the faucet broken?

Is this new faudet a single handle? If so I"ve had this experience also. Most of the time it's because the guts were not lined up properly at the factory. You may have to play with it a bit.
Turn off the water and take the handle off and remove the sleave, remove and rotate the guts. Try 90' at a time. Turn water on to try it. Useually one of the other 3 positions will be right. The correct position is there, but it may take time to find it.

You will find a quicker answer and free parts for your bath room faucet at link above . I am sure it is the mixer valve assembly. If you are not a plumber I suggest a pro be called.

SOURCE: Moen - Single lever bath tub faucet - cold water only

moen does not have a ball and washers....sounds like a Delta maybe. Moen uses cartridges. Either way sounds like a balancing spool problem....but you will need to make sure of the right name for the faucet to get the parts.

This is a common problem with this type of shower mixer valve. They are not very good at regulating with pressure change. Your options are somewhat limited to not flushing the toilet or using any other taps when in use, repalce the mixer valve for a modern ceramic unit or installing a 2 vane hot & cold shower pump.

There is a smell in the dishwasher and on the dishes when clean

I suspect stagnant water is laying in the bottom areas. You will have to lay the machine on it's back to access the pump.

Hot water: Pipes make a banging noise when turned on full force.

Hi, That banging is sometimes called a water hammer. It is made when the water hits an elbow in the piping with a force and bangs into the pipe itself. It is more likely to occur in a long run of pipe. This can be reduced or eliminated by installing an empty tube verticle in the piping near where the hammer is occuring. This tube can be found at most building supply stores. The tube is a pocket of air that acts to absorbe the extra pressure from the piping and stops it from hammering.

Our electric water heater doesn't work.

make sure it is wired correctly, check circuit breaker, check breaker built on to element. If all fails, and it is determined your not getting power to it, you may need a electrician. Be careful. good luck.

I have an Everstar portable A/C unit that I purchased from Home Depoy 2 months ago. It works fine but it has begun to stink. How do I stop the odor?

There is water(condensation) that has built up in the unit and is stinking due to the water is growing mildew. Is the air conditioner condensation line plugged? If this is a window unit also make sure that it is level or not all the water will drain out and cause this odor. The odor should diminish after the water has completely dried out.

Foul odor coming from insinkerator disposal

the only thing that should be used to clean a disposal is "Ice" anything else will / could cause several different problems. Run the water for about 10 seconds, turn the disposal on, put a few handfulls of ice down the drain, when the ice is gone, leave the water running for about 20 seconds. This both cleans the unit and sharpens the blades..

Bosch dishwasher will not drain - causing moldy odor

Hello Mimhoff it depends on how much water is down there. The sump area always has a little water in it to prevent the circulation pump seals from sticking. Usually around 1 to 2 inches. If there is more than that, check the slots at the bottom of the sump on the left side for being clogged and check the end of the drain hose to make sure it is clear. If you are getting a moldy/odor from the dishwasher, try running Dishwasher Magic or Tang thru the dishwasher. This will remove any build up of food or detergent from the dishwasher. If you are running the dishwasher every few days and just scraping your dishes, then either leave the door ajar or run the rinse & hold cycle to help keep the odor down. Bosch doesn't reccommend running bleach thru the dishwasher as this can cause damage to the rubber seals. However 2 tablespoons of bleach once a year won't hurt.
