Cannot get into my computer at all

I cannot get into my computer at all. When I power up it looks as if its going to turn on but then a screen pops up thats not like the regular screen to log in to your user account. I have Windows Xp Professional. In the Username space it says "Dell" but has no password. THe PC wasn't password protected since I am the only one who uses it. Any suggestions? I cannot access anything in the computer b/c I cannot log into it at all. Help!

I have tried to start it in safe mode but the Widows Xp Log On screen still shows up with "Dell" in the Username space. Any other suggestions?

I have followed something along those lines as per Dell troubleshooting but I dont think I did it right. I do not have the operating Cd's to reset the BIOS. It is a Dell Latitude C640

Babb...youdo live up to your name. It worked. Do I have to log on this way now? I tried to change the settings but it would not let me do so. I changed the account and saved the files from the old one. Will the regular Windows XP screen come on now when I turn on my laptop?

Try logging in with a different user. XP pro comes with the administrator user by default! When you're given the prompt to enter a username! Enter the username Administrator with no password! If an error comes up then that means that the administrator account has a password on it! also it could look different cause a setting was changed in Control Panel->User Accounts->Change the way users logon Use Welcome screen was unchecked! I think what you are saying is that the laptop starts up and reaches a Login Box but when you try to login, it doesn't work! If its not that then please let me know! regards, babb

Apparently there is a setting that is prohibiting you from using set the Welcome screen or it could also be a recently installed program that is not allowing you to use the welcome screen!

You should try loggin in with your previous user account! Let's verify the username, and make sure the account is not disabled!

go to Local Users and Groups! An easy way to get there is going to Start->Run and type in lusrmgr.msc and press enter! Select Users in the left pane and look for your previous account in the right pane! Make sure there isnt a tiny red x beside it. If there is, right click on the user and click properties then uncheck Account is Disabled then press OK! (Don't enable any accounts if not necessary, only the one u were using, in Full Name should show the name it had on the welcome screen)

Just to verify that there is no password, we'll right click on the same user and click set password (press Proceed at the warning and leave the fields blank)!
If you didn't have a password and are sure of it then this wouldn't make a difference!

Log off the machine, then log back in as the user(the name under Name, not Full Name)!

When your try to set the Use Welcome Screen under User Accounts, do you get an error???

    Regards,
    babb

Have you tried going into the initial bios setup to check that there is no other utilty set to boot at startup...you may just want to enter that setup and look to set the default options....alos can you let me know that model of dell is it

Ok..you should be able to either press f1 at starting or delete to enter the bios.....this has t be done at time of startup....most bios are not set with passwords so you should be able to enter without problems.....
you can also press esc or tab to get rid of the first screen that does not allow you to see the processing happening at the beginning.......

I have a gateway gx7022e windows xp computer. When i try to boot it up the white letters pop up then the screen goes to the gateway screen and freezes. Then my num lock comes on but my keyboard wont work....

At power on / power up, look for the key during the bootup (black screen with white text), that allows you to enter SETUP. If none designated such as F1, F2 F10 etc, then quickly click the delete button a few times and that may get you into setup. You may have to turn off the computer if you miss that window of time if it rfequires pressing the delete button a few times. Keep an eye out for the Enter Setup key though. To turn off the computer press and hold the power button 'till is shuts down and resart the process until you get to the setup screen in bios. In setup bios environment, look for set factory defaults and then save and restart. That may solve the issue of the lockup.

The monitor will not come up when computer is turned on

You may have failing power supply due to bad filter caps, that will be the first place to look.

No power up

Hello Vincezo:

Try this trick...remove battery...unlplug from wall...hold the power button on and then plug into the wall.

Let me know if this works for you. If not you may be looking at a hardware failure (mainboard).

Good Luck my friend.
