Long story I changed the power cord from 4 prong to 3 prong. One of the screws broke off in the terminal block. I replaced the terminal block and would not start. I than noticed on the old block that there was a ground. Could not find the ground anywhere. I took the ground off a lid switch for a whirlpool tl washer. Tried and it started without problems. I than turned the heat on and the element sparked and broke. Do i have this wired wrong or was the heating element bad. I did notice the there was lint that caught fire when the heater came on.

SOURCE: AMANA dryer model ALE643RBW burnt wire

I would think that:

Low voltage. A lack of proper voltage increases the current flow (amps) and can cause overheating, thus, a burnt wire. Remember, the lower the voltage, the higher the amps.

Bad connection. Poor connections can cause small amounts of arcing, thus burning the connection. This adds resistance to the circuit which causes a possible voltage drop and, again overheating due to higher amps.

Since all that equipment is on the same circuit, I would really think it is a voltage drop situation. With everything calling for power at the same time, the breaker trips. In some cases, it may be just enough for the breaker not to trip but still have a low voltage situation.

There is the possibility of an over current, such as a power spike from the power company but it would have to happen more than just a time or two.
And the outside chance that lighting got into the system when it struck something close to you home but it, in almost every case, would destroy something else, usually electronic. (This has happened to me. Trashed my dryer, dishwasher, and answering machine.)

Good luck and hope this helps. Le me know how you come out.

I have a Maytag Neptune electric dryer. I put it in storage and moved. When I got to my new house I had to change the plug to a 4 prong as the receptacle is different. I changed it as instructions showed...

4-WIRE SYSTEM CONNECTIONS

Remove the ground strap screw from the terminal block support. Fold the ground strap over so both ends of the ground strap will be attached to the center terminal block post.

Connect the neutral (white) conductor of the cord to the center (silver) post of the terminal block. Connect the grounding (green) wire of the cord to the terminal block support using the ground strap screw.

Connect the red and black wires of the cord to the outer posts of the terminal block.

Be sure the terminal block nuts are on tight. Secure the power cord in position. Tighten the strain relief screw(s) in order to clamp the strain relief to the cord. Replace the terminal block cover.

How do I change a 4 prong to a 3 prong dryer code

When replacing a 4 prong cord with a 3 prong cord you put black and red wires to the outside posts of your terminal block. The white wire from your three prong dryer cord goes to the center of your terminal block. The yellow and green wire from the dryer go together and attach to the cabinet ground.

Need a to change power cord from a 3 prong to a 4 prong on a maytag neptune electric dryer an I need the color codes

RED & BLACK go to L1 & L2 POWER terminals on the dryer (polarity is NOT aw factor on these 2 wires) the WHITE wire goes on the N- NEUTRAL terminal usually the center terminal between the 2 POWER terminals on the 3 terminal power block on the dryer, then the GREEN wire is the safety ground and is connected on any METALLIC spot on the dryer case, usually theres a screw somewhere just off the 3 wire terminal block mentioned above

I need to change my 3 prong to a 4 prong

Unplug the dryer then remove the terminal block cover and disconnect the 3-prong cord from the dryer. Note that the cord has red , black, and white wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can switch places. There's also a ground strap wire also connected to the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire.

Get yourself a 4-prong cord and note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes, like the 3-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect the 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 3-prong cord to the terminal block. The ground strap wire now just need to be connected to the remaining 4th wire, the green/yellow wire instead of the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire. Reinstall the terminal block cover and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4 whereas, on the other hand, converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3.. Kenmore 700 dryer with a three prong cord is being converted to four prong. Is there a drawing of what wires by color going to the proper screw location?

There's a ground strap wire (green/yellow) attached to the dryer cabinet and connected to the center terminal where the white neutral wire of the power cord is connected. Disconnect this ground strap wire and remove the 3-prong power cord from the terminal block taking note where the wires are connecedt to. Connect the 4-prong power cord in the same way same wire colors of the 3-prong cord are connected to the terminal block. Connect the ground strap wire to the remaining fourth wire (green/yellow). Just do the reverse when converting 4-prong to 3-prong. The link below might enlighten you further on this matter.

Need to replace 4 prong cord with a 3 prong cord on a new 500 series dryer.

On the back of the dryer, remove the screw(s) that hold the access cover to the back panel that cover the terminal block where the cord goes through the back panel and connects to the wiring terminal power block, loosen the two screws on the cord clamp the clamp it to the back of the dryer just enough to release the cord, remove the four nuts / screws that are connecting the 4 wires from the cord to the terminal block and or the back of the dryer, with the new 3 wire cord just match the colors on the terminal block with the same color wires that are connected to the other side of the terminal block, red, black on the outer most terminals and the white or green to the middle terminal, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU PLACE A JUMPER WIRE/STRAP FROM THE MIDDLE TERMINAL WHERE THE WHITE OR GREEN WIRE CONNECTS TO THE TERMINAL BLOCK OVER TO THE CASE/CABINET OF THE DRYER, THIS CAN CONNECT TO THE CASE AT ANY AVAILABLE SCREW NEAR THE TERMINAL BLOCK! In short this means that the neutral and ground of the dryer must be connected together in a 3 wire set-up.
GOOD LUCK!

Need to change power cord on maytag dryer from 3 prong to 4

Always disconnect electricity before beginning this process.

All the 4 wire cords I have seen are color-coded. The white wire goes to the middle terminal, the green wire goes to any screw you can reach that goes into the metal case of the dyer. The red and black go to the outside terminals of the block and while it doesn't matter which color goes to which terminal I usually follow the color code of the interior dryer wiring that already exists. Good Luck.

How to hook up a ge dryer change from a THREE PRONG TO FOUR PRONG HOOK UP

Replace the old Three prong cord with a 4 prong.

White wire from 4 prong cord goes to the center terminal of the connector block. If there is a metallic strip on that terminal that goes to ground remove it from the terminal and bend it away from the terminal and down so it either touches the case or ends in thin air. Be sure it can't touch either of the outside terminals of the 3 terminal block.

Red and Black wires of cord go to outside terminals of the three terminal block. It makes no difference which one goes on which terminal but I usually attach them so the color of the cord wire matches the colors of the wires already on that terminal.

The last terminal is green and should be attached tightly to any screw of the case or any metal bracket attached to the case that it is long enough to reach as this is the ground. This lead protects you from electrocution if the dryer has an internal problem and should be tight to the case.

Change the power cord from 4 prong to three

If converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong configuration, the wires are terminated at the terminal block as follows:

RED (hot) - to RED
BLACK (hot) - to BLACK
WHITE (neutral) - to WHITE
GREEN (ground) - is terminated to neutral by using a common screw at the terminal block, or by using a ground strap from the neutral terminal to a ground on the equipment casing.

If in doubt, the following link explains the color codes:

If you have any questions, please ask me. I hope this helps you.
