Sony SDM-HS73 Not Staying On

By Tigers02 on Apr 30, 2007

" "
I have a Sony SDM-HS73 17" flat panel LCD that is malfunctioning on me. I usually keep my computer on all the time and turn the monitor off at night. When I tried to turn it on this morning, the screen came up as usual but then went blank after about 10 sec. The green power light was still lit but there was no picture. I turned the power off and then turned the monitor back on and had the same thing happen. I saw my computer screen (perfectly fine in terms of size, brightness, etc.) for about 10-20 sec and then the screen went blank again.

Having some knowledge about computers, I tried the monitor with a different video card and on several different computers but still had the same result. I also called Sony, but since the LCD was out of warranty, then wanted a lot of money to send it in to get fixed. I wanted to see if someone knew how to fix this problem or if I should just ditch the monitor and get a new one. I think it is a power board issue, but I'm not sure. Any advice/suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

-   Monitor is on and cycling power on the monitor, I can see the screen for about 5 seconds or less. I tried with another computer and same results so confirm that the monitor is at fault. This monitor isn't that old! My HP monitor on a different computer has lasted twice as long and is still going under similar use model. Sony just lost me!!!
I'll attempt the suggested capacitor replacement. -   plmdco

-   I have the same problem. Stays on for a sec, long enough to show the 4 color bar and then goes black. -   tallwall

-   I too have had the same problem. After more than four years of flawless service, it went on a blink today. Tested with other connectors, tested it on two computers, got the same results - thus the flaw is in the monitor, not the cables not the video card. Monitor turns on, green power light is on, can see the picture for about a second, then monitor goes blank (and black). About a week ago, for a few hours, it had made a few buzzy, sporadic noises that went away, but as soon as I heard that, I knew the days were numbered. Really loved this monitor and would hate to scrap it. I still think of it as new. Isn't there anything from Sony on this? If all of us are having this problem, it's seems like a single component going bad at the same time.-   Hubble

The problem is with power inverter, usually the capacitors go bad and need to changed, they might be bulged and or leaking. Very cheap fix, less than a buck apiece and an hour with a solder iron. Google it to find more info.

Have a sony with the same issues, changed about 4 caps no such luck. Noted that the owner had the the brightness setting on high and the brightness control at 100%. Changed it to low light and brightness setting to 75. The monitor has of now been running for over half an hour. Will now resolder the transformers, do you guys think it is a bad or cheap transformer as there are no flyback transformers in these flat screens.

I'm having the same problem with my four year old monitor. While surfing the web, the monitor went black. I disconnected power, restarted computer, etc. Now, when I turn on the monitor, it stays on for a few seconds and then reverts to black. I can turn it on again and again, but the same thing happens. Any solutions?

Same deal here! Everything was working great, now monitor won't stay powered up...never get anything other than the "no input signal" "go to power save screen. Disconnected...reconnected...rebooted. Light doesn't stay green for more than a few seconds and then it goes yellow. Saw the other post...don't know what they are referring to with regard to bulging electrical something or other? Anyone else?
