Electrolux ESM6600SA Side by Side Refrigerator getting too cold after a clean

My wife recently cleaned our refigerator and freezer. Unfortunately it appears something as happened because now the refrigerator is so cold, everything inside is freezing even if we turn the temperature controls right down.

Hello John Wood - From what you have describes it sounds like the damper door might be open causing the temperature to be too cold. Use a mirror to look at damper door at the rear of compartment and use a hair dryer on damper door to deice for 5 to 10 minutes. Allow 24 hours and if the temperature is still too cold, then I would have a professional look at the damper door for replacement.

SOURCE: Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator, freezer doesn't work, refrigerator works

Unless specifically made for use in a garage most units won't work properly. The owners manual should say what the temp range for proper operation is (usually 55F is the low range). This is because the refrigerator section doesn't need to be "cooling" to maintain 37F if the temps on the outside are below 55F. These things are made to work in a 70F room and will not work properly if under 55F. Stupid thing thinks it's cold enough so it will never turn on, the refer section will stay cold/cool due to outside temps but since the compressor never runs the freezer will just be the same temp as the refer section (at best). Sorry, but in order for a freezer or refrigerator to work in an unheated space it must have the temp control device controling the freezer section NOT the fresh food section. In other words, that model will not work in a garage unless the temps are above 55F always.

SOURCE: Refrigerator/freezer gets warm intermittently

sounds like your thermostat is faulty
the thermostat reads the temperature of the cabinet and controls the temperature
the 1 thing to check on the uprights is the evaporator is in the freezer and that makes the cool then there is a fan that blows the air around the fridge and freezer to freeze things
now there is a cycle that hapens to cycle usualy every 12 hours and that is the defrost cycle
this cycle turns off the compressor and fan turns on an defrost element on the evaporator and heats up the coils to get rid of the ice
the ice turns to water and runs through a drain to a evaporator tray and when the cycle is finished the fridge stars up again and goes into the cooling state again
when the thermostat decides that the fridge is cold enough it turns of the compressor and so on it goes through the cycles as required
if the drai is blocked or the defrost system is not working the evaporator will get choked with ice and the fan will not beable to let air through to cool things off

SOURCE: Side by Side Whirlpool Refrigerator: Refrigerator is freezing food

Hi, riverbyfarm
You did try what i would of recommended first!
The resetting of the system by, turning off the controls of the freezer and the fridge first and then unplugging it or if you can't reach the plug, to throw the breaker off for 5 minutes!
That is a possibility in the order that I described!!!!!

Second I ask, is the freezer packed full to the hilt with packages?
In some refrigerators if the frozen food covers the air vents in the freezer cause they are plied sky high and deep in the freezer it can cause a problem.
The freezer and fridge share the air and have to have the vents or passages free so to allow sharing of the cold air!
Let me know if the measures as I prescribed have an affect.

Waiting for your reply!
Bless You Huuum

One of two things is happening either your thermostat is on its last legs or you are getting a ice build up in the freezer area, that is telling the thermostat that the freezer and refrigerator is cold enough.

I would suggest you remove the food from your freezer side; remove the shelves; remove the inner back panel and see if there is an ice build up. If there is, then your defrost assembly is not working and will need replacement.

The good news is that if you defrost the unit (a hair dryer will speed the process) you can use the refrigerator until the defrost assembly arrives. And the defrost assembly is relatively easy to change out.

It sounds like your freezer was going through the automatic defrost cycle but the water couldn't go through the plugged drain. Clean the drain so the water can go out.
The refrigerator side gets cold by the cold air that comes from the freezer, so in order to have a cold refrigerator you need a cold freezer.
After you have cleaned the drain, turn all back to original settings.
Hope this helped, let me know.

Refigerator is not getting very cold sounds like its working ok we have it on the coldest setting

Firstly check the Condenser coils, these are copper coils of tubing usually located on the back of the unit near the ground. They need to be free of all dust and grease to work at maximum efficiency and it is recommended to clean them every 6 to 10 months.
If they are or have recently been cleaned then make sure the inside fan (if there is one) isn't being blocked by anything and make sure there is adequate airflow throughout the freezer/refrigerator.
If neither of these seem to be the problem then you may have a refrigerant leak and you need a certified technician to take a look at it.

Refrigerator and freezer not getting cold

Clean out the coils on the bottom, make sure the fan motr is turning below and remove the relay from the compressor. A lot of these relays are failing lately. If the relay sounds like a slt shaker inside it is toat. if it makes no sound at all it is bad. You should beable to feel the sliding start switch inside.
