Question about Goldstar MV-1526 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Goldstar MV1526W won't run

Fan turns on and lights come on, but the turntable will not turn and it will not cook. Is it the magnetron or a board that won't kick it on?

Re: Goldstar MV1526W won't run

It sounds like you have a bad door switch or mount. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: You can order parts here: Door switches and other common parts should be available at local appliance parts stores and home centers.

GE Microwave (JVM1860CD001) control board buzzes.

Magnetron If the microwave is loud or noisy only when cooking, the magnetron tube might be defective. The magnetron uses high voltage, high current DC power to generate the microwave frequency that cooks the food. Under normal circumstances the magnetron is nearly silent. However if it is damaged or nearly burned out it can begin emitting high pitched or growling noises. It's not normally dangerous to use a microwave oven when it makes these noises, but they are an indication that the magnetron is almost dead and will need to be replaced.
Exhaust Fan Motor If the microwave is loud when running the fan motor might be
Stirrer Motor If the microwave is loud or noisy the stirrer motor might be worn out. The stirrer is a metal blade which slowly turns around, deflecting the microwave energy in a random pattern inside the microwave oven. As the motor nears the end of its useful life it begins to make grinding noises. The microwave will not heat food evenly without this stirrer, the motor should be replaced.
Turntable Motor If the microwave is loud or noisy the turntable motor might be worn out. This is a common problem and relatively easy to replace.

Microwave will not heat

If the microwave is 7 years old or less, there are too things that come to mind, defective magnetron, or the inverter board, cost should be considered when going ahead with repairs.

Goldstar MV1526W runs, turntable and fan turn, but does not cook

Thanks for mentioning the model number and detailed symptoms. That makes all the difference!

Since the turntable is running, the most likely problems in this case are a failed magnetron or a repairable bad connection at the F or FA terminal of the magnetron.

If there were a loud hum, that would also be either the magnetron or a shorted high voltage diode.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

We have also uploaded the service manual to our site here to help you.

Please note that the manual does not give you part numbers.

You can get part numbers and order parts for LG / Goldstar products from Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

Microwave runs but does not heat or cook food

If a Goldstar, LG or Zenith MV1610 or MV1608 is running but not seeming to heat a load placed in center of turntable, its probably because the "stirrer" intended to spread microwaves generated by the magnetron around the cook chamber is stuck so that most all the heating is directed toward the back and top rather than the center of the cook chamber. This usually occurs after cooking for longer than a minute with no load in the cook chamber - as when a model w/o a timer (such as a MV1608) is intentionally operated in cook mode to serve as a kitchen timer, or when a model with a timer function (such a MV1610) is accidentally operated for longer than a minute w/o any load. Before assuming the magnetron (usually warranted for 5, 8 or even 10 years) or other high voltage component such as diode or capacitor needs to be replaced, try “cooking” a 16 oz pyrex cup of water at full power on the outer edge of the turntable for 2-3 minutes - which usually reactivates the "stirrer" and restores normal cooking function.

either your h/v diode h/v capacitor or the magnetron tube are faulty if the lights and turntable still operate

It is running, but doesn't heat the food.

I had the same thing happen to my microwave and the Magnatron was the bad part. There are some things that you can check and I would be glad to help. I bought the parts for around $70.00, but mine was a built in unit.
Let me know, I will help.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Sharp Carousel R-530CW

Hi, I am not sure of the cost concerning the control board, however, it does sound like a control board problem, or a door switch problem, I would need to see the specific unit diagram to know for sure, but many microwaves, not all, but many, have a door switch related to that part of the circuit, usually the fuse would blow at that point, but there again, it depends on the circuit. I would suggest you get the unit checked soon however. Hope that helps somewhat, and thank you.
