Question about Radio Communications
We purchased a new Pro 106 scanner and can not get it programmed. No one at Radio shack seem to know how to help us??? Is there software that we need to buy (where to get it??) or what do we need to do?? Please help.
As an employee of Radioshack, I have found that you can use scancat lite to progrom the pro 106. Programing conventional trunking systems work well with this system. However after three days of frustration I did find out how to program the digital channels. After programing the conventional channels in, you will have to program the digital channels in manually. Do not program the group id's into the scanner, just leave it in a "wildcat" search. When the group Id shows up while listening to the scanner push enter and that will program the Id in. When you got the all the Id's that you need, then program the scanner to a private mode, this will let you to listen to just what you want to listen to. I am still working on finding better solutions.

First you need to know the frequencies you want programmed into it, you can find them at www.radioreference.com With most radio shack scanners you first set it to the channel you want to program with the manual (man) button, then you push program (pgm) and type in the frequency, then press enter (ent) and move to the next channel with manual and repeat the process. Another way is to program it with a computer but not scanners have that feature,if it does you need a cable you can get at radio shack to hook it to your computer.radioreference also has forums for radio shack scanners where you can talk with others who own the same radio.

I also have the Pro-106 Scanner. I live where the V CHIP isn't listed, but no big deal. RS has Programmed my Scanner about 5-6 times but the MARCS won't play. So I programmed the Numbers in myself, BUT then an error comes up. After about 3 more times of visiting RS I found that I had to turn on feature's and then all of a sudden MARCS has been playing non stop but nothing else will come in, the ERROR messages are back again, occassionally an Analog Frequency will come in.....I wondering if I get this wiped out again and start with programming in each Freqencey how hard this will be? I know there are Wildcards, Digital,Marcs and Analog.....but will they separate themselves? Help Please.
The guys really do not know how to do it themselves and I think that is terrible that they don't have some sort of training! If it hadn't been for picking this Scanner up for a little over $300 on Ebay, I would ask for my money back.......can you offer any help? Thanks!

My Pro 106 just came in last night. The Sales person at RS hooked it up to their computer terminal and programmed in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. It seems they have a deal with a software company and they will put in one area for you. It at least started me out. Their owner's manual needs KISS section.
Go back and see if your store has the software and can program it for you to start. If a problem, talk to the store manager--some of the folks there don't know much 'cause they are part time and some were just Christmas help.

For anyone who has either the Pro-106, Pro-197, GRE500/600 scanners, you will be MUCH better off using one of the software programs available to program it with. I use both Win500 and PSRedit500. Either one is a great program, and both have a 30 day trial on the software. As was mentioned above, go to www.radioreference.com and you can find more info on the radios as well as the software needed to program them.
With a premium subscription at radioreference.com, you can find and download what frequencies you want in a matter of minutes. Using the programming software I mentioned makes programming this radio much, much easier.

If you read in the manual it tells you how to program the scanner from the memory banks preloaded in your scanner. I live in FL and that worked until they re-banded recently. Looks like I will have to do everything manually.

Ryan at the Monticello Minnesota is great and knows his stuff. That is why I went many miles out of my way to go to a store where they knew their stuff.
I do understand that many Radio shackstores do not have this calaber of help but not all stores have the volume of sales to support this calaber of help.

I bought the pro 106 on 3/11/2010
I READ THE USER'S GUIDE FROM COVER TO COVER.
i programed it and it worked great until yesterday.
we stopped by to see an old grade school buddy of mine and were there maybe 60 to 90 minutes. i left the scanner on as i always do it was operating and was powered by freshly charged re-chargeable Batteries.
it was about 6:30 pm and very cool about 78 degrees and we parked in the shade.
when we returned to the car i grabbed it and saw nothing on the screen so i thought i turned it off and i was going to turn it on only to find it was already on. i turned it off removed the batteries and placed them in my quick charger in the car they were already fully charged by the light indicator.
i put the batteries in and turned on the radio and nothing only the back light comes on it beeps when i press buttons but nothing else.
i Called the store where i bought it 5 months ago and the sales clerk did not know what the radio was let alone if it was a radio shack item. WTF DON'T THEY TEACH THEM ANYTHING ?
IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE DO SO!!!!! I KNOW HOW TO PROGRAM THE 106.

SOURCE: programming pro 106 scanner
Your scanner covers conventional frequencies as well as a variety of trunking systems. Programming steps can be detailed, and they vary according to the system being worked, so it's not practical to attempt a full programming tutorial in this short response. Your best bet is to review the operating manual for the scanner, and then follow the steps for the system(s) that you want to program. If you run into a specific problem, let us know and we'll do our best to work through it with you.
Need the manual? You can download/print it here:
