Check for no paper.
If there is paper, then there is an error in the page it wants to print.
Try a power cycle. (Turn Off, count to 10, turn back On.)

My brother MFC-420CN is printing way to slow. It there anything I can do to make it go faster?

There's no way, unless you sacrifice quality.

The printer prints at just the one speed, unless you select "draft" print-quality, or print "black-only", instead of "colour".

How to clear an error message

Usually the only way is to power the printer off and on. You may find that you also have to delete the print job from the printer que as well and then reprint the missing pages.

Out of memory

you need to clean out the units memory

Print data remains in the MFC’s memory

Re-start printing from your computer.

Print data remains in the MFC’s memory. The USB cable was unplugged while he computer was sending the data to the MFC.

Press Stop/Exit. The MFC will cancel the job and eject the page that is being printed.

Can the 420CN print double sided pages

There is only a manual double sided printing avaiable:
After the first side was printed you have to turn the page into the papertray again.

Canon bubble jet printers can do double side printing but the back side black print will be mingled through C/Y/M ink!

Is it a mfc 420cn or a mfc 5460cn?

Did you have a paperjam before getting the error?
This might be due to the paperjam.
