Super hot water out of the group head on my Rancilio Sylvia

I replaced the thermostat I have descaled my machine. It doesn't trip my GFI outlet. Does anyone know what might be wrong. I temperature surf and the temp of my water is really inconsistent. I can't figure out what is wrong with it? I asked the techs at WLL and they are stumped and suggested I ask around. Hopefully you can help!

My Rancilio Silva is not making the water or steam hot anymore. Is it fairly easy to replace the heating element?

Your Silvia may need to be "primed."  If air gets in the intake tube (I inadvertently did this while descaling), it can cause your boiler thermostat to malfunction and superheat the water.  You can read how to prime here:

try in different GFI outlet, if it trips the new one, the coffee maker is dangerous and you should return/replace it, it has a short.

if it doesn't, replace the GFI outlet, it is old.

Descaling Single Boiler Home espresso machines (HOME SINGLE BOILER ESPRESSO MACHINES)

Approximately every 3 months (depending on your use and the water hardness), clean the machine with natural citric acid based decalcifying agent.
1. Add a descaling solution into the water reservoir. Mix thoroughly to dissolve (use warm water for better results).
2. Remove the filter holder and place a cup under the group head and another cup, or other container, under the steam wand to catch cleaning solution.
3. Turn espresso machine on, turn coffee pump on and run approximately 8 oz. of solution through the brew head. Turn machine off and let the machine sit for 15 minutes.
4.Run approximately 8 oz. through the steam wand, and again, turn machine off and let sit for 15 minutes.
Repeat by allowing solution to run alternately through the steam wand and brew head. Turn espresso machine off after each cycle. Repeat process until solution has been run through.
5. Do not leave espresso machine on. Do not wait for the ready light to come on. Do not use the steam switch during this process. Do not allow reservoir to run empty!
6. Rinse reservoir thoroughly with fresh water. Refill reservoir with fresh water. Run half a tank of fresh water through group head, alternating between group head and steam wand.

You need to remove the rubber group head gasket and clean the head thoroughly. A new gasket will help a lot especially if you haven't replaced it in 5 years. I would also recommend having all the preventative maintenance done on the machine to help keep problems to a minimum.

Yes it is easy to replace, but first check the end of the steam wand make sure the holes are not blocked, If you open the steam valve and the wand is hot it is because of blockage, if you only get warm water and no steam then the thermostat is gone.

Remove the shower screen and screw from the head, make sure screen is clean and run head without screen in place, if you get a good flow, problem on screen, if not then problem is on the inside of the machine between top of the head and pump. You can try descaling the machine.

Sylvia still makes great milk for steam but on Saturday it stopped producing hot water for expresso. What do I do? I live in North Tas

Hi
. If the brew thermostat is bad it won’t heat. To test for this, push the steam switch and wait 15 seconds. Then open the steam knob and push the middle button and see if the water is warm. If it is then you need a new brew thermostat. That is the thermostat that has the red dot on the top. It sets on top of the boiler next to the steam thermostat. If you take the top off, make sure that the machine is unplugged.

Were you using cleancaf to descale? If so, it is not a strong enough descaler. Use Dezcal. or a Dezcal cleancaf mixture. The two work great together.

Make sure you get some descaler in the solenoid area by turning on and off the coffee button.

Hope it works out for you.

No water coming through the pump

Ok, We got a solution. We have hard water from a well. We disassembled the 3-way valve and removed the brass valve receiver. The outlet going to the coffee was plugged up solid with gunk (technical term). I used a tiny piece of wire from a wire tie and cleaned out the gunk, then soaked all the brass parts in descaler. The whole effort only took about half an hour. We used a crescent wrench, phillips screwdriver, and a 3mm allen wrench. We found the directions for the process at http://memweb.newsguy.com/~jenkins/silvia/. I think that descaling loosened a bunch of gunk from the tank and it got jammed in the tiiny hole.
