    no manual in box.

I cannot figure out how to PRESET the radio stations. I have to push the + or - buttons EVERY TIME to go up or down, scanning for strong signals. Another user on another site put it very well, so I quote here:

The preset feature for the radio stations is a bit of a problem. The manual claims there is a way to get a single station input as a preset if you know the preset number you are going to set. When I follow the manual, it actually keeps stepping through the entire preset feature and going through finding all stations that have a strong enough signal.

The one main station I listen to, you have to have the radio sitting in a certain spot to have a strong “enough” signal to pick it up on the preset scan. I was trying to manually set the station & preset it on the preset numbers, and every time I walked through the set up directions for doing a single station, the entire preset scan started over. It did not work they way the manual claimed it should.

Sony cfd-s01 boombox radio

Hi Bart,
You will find there is a specification plate on the rear of the unit.
It should have a rating on it showing the wattage of the unit. This is usually the amount needed to operate all the functions of the boombox.
The wattage is your input voltage multiplied by the current draw in amps. So the amperage is the rated wattage of the unit divided by the input voltage.
Usually all power goes through the transformer, so I would use this input amperage as a guide, and assuming there is no power loss, use the same calculation for the output - you know it is 9 volts, so the wattage going to the unit is the same as the input wattage, so you can calculate the amperage from this.
Transformers usually work on AC input/output, so there will also be a rectifier to convert the AC to DC for your boombox.
I would add 10 - 20% above your calculation to make sure you have sufficient power. Also I suggest that you install a fuse between your transformer and the boombox for safety.

I have a sony CFD-S01 which will play commercial cd's but when a cd-r is inserted it either won't recognize the disk or it jumps constantly after appros 10 sec, any ideas?

The CFD-S01 is designed for use with CD-R and CD-RW discs. With that in mind a few things come to mind. Are the CD-R discs you are using music or data discs? There is a difference and some CD players do not get along with data discs and won't play them well if at all. Also the burn rate used can have an effect - too fast and it won't play well. If a disc doesn't play at all it might not be finalized. A disc must be finalized on the recorder it was burned on before it is playable on any other machine.

You will need to use the Forward and Reverse buttons on the CD player. Set the station by holding the button you want to set it to until it blinks and shows the station number.
To set more that 10 stations. Press the (>10) button and then enter 11 or 12 or so on and set the stations the same as above.
