Question about Dishwashers

3 Answers

I have a kitchenaid model KUDS01JBT dishwasher. The Chopper Assembly keeps pluging up causing the dishwasher not to wash properly. Can I remove the chopper Assembly and run the dishwasher without causing any further problems to the dishwasher or will it cause other problems with the pump etcetera? Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Pat

This is the little chopper assembly and I am not sure if it is removed completely from the kitchenaid dishwasher what the particles of food would plug up in the dishwasher?

  1. Check the water temperature. Should be 125 to 140 F.
  2. Check pump re-circulation., Listen, see if it sounds like it is spraying the water around with enough pressure.
  3. Check water level when the fill cycle has completed. Should be just under the heating element. If not, possibly need to replace the water inlet valve.
  4. Check the spray arm and pump cover for splits or leaks.
  5. Check to make sure dishwasher is draining after each cycle. There should only be a little water in the bottom of the tub.
  6. Make sure the dishes are loaded properly, or dishwasher is not overloaded.
  7. Possibly try a different detergent. Some liquid-gels will bubble and a pump cannot pump bubbles.

It would most likely cause damage to the unit itself but more importantly it would clog up the drain and cost tons of money depending on where the clog is. Just rinse real good before loading the dishwasher.

The dishwasher has a series of pumps and hoses and twists and turns it doesn't take much to plug drains.

Water will not come out top agitator on my kitcheaid dishwasher

You need to take out the bottom rack of the dishwasher and disassemble the lower spin arm and filters underneath it. You need to get right down to the chopper blade and disassemble and clean out the chopper blade assembly. Make sure there is nothing buried in the little holes. Once done and you are sure it is clean. Reassemble it all. It should work fine. Having said that.......It will happen again in a few washes until you replace the whole chopper blade assembly.

Kitchenaid dishwasher model KUDW03CTBL2 arms do not turn

There is a blockage in the wash pump area which is preventing the water from reaching the wash arms.

The problem could be the chopper unit (item 6) in this diagram. You will have to open the assembly according to the diagram and locate the blockage.

Hope this helps.

Detergent opener does not dispense detergent during wash cycle. ive tried washing 4 different times and detergent sits undissolved in dispensor. dispensor door does not pop open either when i open door...

Most KitchenAid dishwashers have an adjustable upper rack, since I do not have your model number I cannot advise on specifics but if you move the upper rack to the higher position the dispenser will open a little further.

Also if you are not washing well on the upper rack you may have either a plugged spray arm or sump.

Look at the spray arms close, if the holes are plugged then it will not spray into the dispenser properly.

If you have a tall tub KitchenAid then the sump may need cleaned.

Here are instructions that might help. But not knowing your specific model these instructions may not apply
A plugged up sump can cause a multitude of problems in a dishwasher, it can make the dishwasher not clean as well as it should, make the cycle run longer, it can create noises and redeposit food.

To clean the sump follow the directions below.

- Remove the lower rack

- Remove the lower wash arm (1) by turning the nut (4) clockwise (right) lift the arm off, there is a bearing (3) (small thin plastic washer) under the arm, be sure not to loose it. Lift the tab on the back of the feed tube cap (2) and swing it to the right and lift up, this may need a bit of pressure to release it.

- Remove the 4 screws (3) from the accumulator (1), lift off the accumulator. Remove 1 screw(7) from the cover (8) this is located down inside of the sump (4) on the left front side. Lift up and remove the cover (8), watch for glass and clean out all the debris from the sump and especially around the the area of the chopper and screen (6) which will be exposed with the cover (8) off. If the screen is blocked with debris that usually means you need a new chopper. it may be broken or loose and not doing its job.

Once clean reassemble and enjoy a dishwasher that cleans the dishes again.

My kitchenaid KUDI01DL dishwasher began making a lot of noise while running, then subsequently decided not to circulate the water around to wash the dishes. It sounds like the motor is running (maybe) but...

The problem is very likely in the chopper and/or somewhat possible in the impeller. The chopper is replaceable from the front. Disassemble the pump, the chopper will be on its left side under a cover. That cover is kinda tricky to remove (remove all torx screws you can find, push the thingy on the top of cover with flat screwdriver to the right, slightly pulling it up).
The impeller used to be a replaceable part, and is no longer available separately, so you'd have to replace the whole motor assembly. To get to it - pull dishwasher out and lay it down on its back (or on its side, if there's no water in it)

Good luck!

Top spray not functioning in dishwasher

The top rack is not cleaning because of low water pressure from the wash motor to the upper spray arm.
Assuming the top spray arms are clear of debris, remove the lower spray arm and lower feed tube to access the wash motor. Remove the 4 torx screws and the filter (accumulator assembly). Remove the torx screw and the inlet protector that covers the chopper assembly. Make sure the chopper is not broken (broken chopper will fill with debris and block water flow). While holding the chopper blade, reach inside the "D" shaped opening on top of the motor and spin the wheel/motor by hand in each direction to make sure either the chopper gear or the motor gear that drives the chopper is not broken. Replace the chopper if necessary (part # 8268383). If the motor gear is broken, replace the sump and motor assembly (part # 8535150). Remove any debris from the sump area in the process.
You don't have to shut the power off to the dishwasher because the door will be open, but if you feel more comfortable, do so.
Good luck!

Will not clean

I had the same problem with my Kitchenaid dishwasher. It would fill with water, heat up, and sound like the motor was running just fine. However, the bottom dishes would be poorly cleaned and the upper dishes would not be touched. Fortunately, my repair did not require pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter. The repair was done within the wash cavity.

I completely drained the water out of the dishwasher (if it hasn't ran through it's cycle). Use a turkey baster if necessary. I Removed the lower wash arm, upper arm supply tube and then started removing plastic cover parts until I worked my way down to a part called the "Chopper assembly". Torex screwdriver bits were necessary in my case.

The chopper assembly is a small metal screen, a metal blade and a plastic drive rod that spins the metal blade.

In my case, the plastic part of the assembly was broken and the chopper was not spinning. The screen was plugged with food junk and water could not get past the screen to the wash arms. the spinning blade also ads a little pressure...when it spins.

the part is $21 online, but may run $30 at a local parts store.

DISHWASHER NOT CLEANING TOP RACK DISHES

I had the same problem (no water being delivered to the top rack) and found that the chopper assembly was completely blocked. I removed it, washed it, put the whole thing back together. It works like new now.

Note that it is not easy to get to the chopper assembly. I used the "pump and motor parts" diagram on http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208193720.pdf. The inlet protector was especially difficult to get off, but I was able to pry it off to expose and remove the chopper assembly. I cleaned all the parts I removed really well before re-installing.

Loud whining noise while washing

It may be debris in the food chopper or the motor going bad.

Inspect food chopper:
Remove lower spray arm and rear water supply tube to upper spray arm. Remove torx screws that secure the sump cover. Remove the rounded cover on the left side to expose the chopper assembly. Inspect for breakage of blockage. There may be an additional plastic screen to remove first.

Whirlpool dishwasher model gu1200 not working

I checked. There is no sheet of any kind inside or below the door of my Whirlpool dishwasher.

In any case, opening up the non-washing washer revealed that the filter behind the chopper assembly was clogged with food. I cleaned it off, put the thing back together again, and it was washing dishes again, until about three days later. I took it apart again and found food clogging the filter behind the chopper. I thought the chopper wasn't chopping, so I replaced it. It was around $16. About three days later it wasn't washing dishes again.

Further examination (dis-assembly of the sump motor and impeller) revealed that the end of the impeller (which is designed to engage the chopper) had broken off, thus the chopper no longer spins with the sump motor. The impeller costs about $20 and isn't too hard to replace, as long and you keep track of what you've dis-assembled and put it back together in reverse order.

On whirlpool dishwashers, the sump motor drives the impeller (it's connected via the threaded end of the motor shaft) and the impeller, in turn, drives the chopper. The chopper you can replace from inside the tub, without removing the dishwasher from its home or taking apart the sump assembly. But save your $16, as that probably isn't what is wrong... The impeller, being screwed onto the motor shaft, requires complete removal of the dishwasher so that you can completely remove the base assembly that holds the motor assembly.

If you have a GU-series whirlpool washer, the tech manual can be found here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/52521bdbd0ef763c85256cbc00520548/$FILE/8178022.pdf

It has complete instructions for the replacement of every part.
