Funny you say so...I have the exact same problem with an 06 pathfinder SE. Started at about 50K miles for me. Almost sounds like something is loose but I doubt that is truly the case. My brother in law seems to think it might be the catalytic converter. Before I take it in to the shop I would like to know what else it could be. Let me know if you get the solution. Thanks, Edwin

Take a look at Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB05-15b. Title = "Rattle Noise From Vias Power Valve Actuator / Intake Manifold Collector" This appears to describe your problem exactly. I have the same problem with my 2005 Xterra and I am going to try the recommended fix myself at home.

Willyswan

I have a 2005 Pathfinder LE.....I bought it new. I never really noticed before, but the engine sounds much louder than any other SUV I've been in. Are these engines supposed to be this loud?

All 2005 thru Nov 2009 Pathfinders,Frontiers and Exterra's have bad timing chains.

Borg Warner has a newer udated one, the factory started using,Nov 2009

Yes they are louder than other suv's

Go to You Tube and listen to other 4.0 V6 Nissans

And NO Nissan---------Does Not Do ANY recalls,Not even O.J's Attorney could make them help you

They will give you a new Modified Fuel Sending Unit-free,because the govt said so

NHTSA 10V075000

Deformed Fuel Tank-Like 3 years running. Nissan is really bad as far as making good or retaining a customer.

Engine noise

Sounds like a problem with the power valve actuator in the intake manifold collector. I would check with a Nissan dealer first and inquire of any recalls or service bulletins. Might save ya time & money.

Check engine light

I am going to take a guess and say, that you check engine light is a EVAP leak and you will need new VENT CONTROL VALVE and a WATER SEPARATOR KIT, but that's just a guess. prettycommon problem on your vehicle. As far as the whoorling sound goes, those have upper timing chain problems. You are going to hear more of a whinning noise at about 2000 rpm's. Those chains are waranteed 5years or 60000 miles.
