The Audio Setting has to be setup in the messenger you are using. I will give you what I wrote on setting up both the Audio and Video for Skype and Yahoo Messenger.

Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are
to be used with.Just installing the
camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.
Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for
the Audio and Video to function properly.
A.Skype Setup:
After downloading and installing Skype set it up as follows:
Go to TOOLS,
then OPTIONS, and click on Audio Settings and set the
Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
Then
click on the Video Settings.
The
camera if installed properly will come up and show a picture.
Then
on the bottom of the page click on Save.
The camera and audio should function properly.Your friends and Family will now see and
talk to you.
B.Yahoo Setup:
After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger set
it up as follows:
Go to Messenger
at the top left and click on it.
Next
go down to Preferences and click on it.
Next Calling
and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to
the computer Audio Card.
Next
go to the Test Audio section and(in blue writing) click on“Open the call setup assistant” and follow the instructions on the
left window.
When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so
you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to. Hope this will be of some help in setting yours up. Bud

I
have a Dell 1545 with Dell web cam central & I've had this issue.
The problem is that Dell web cam central installs it's own microphone
settings onto your laptop called something like Dell web cam Live!. This
isn't the built in microphone in my laptop & maybe not yours
either. You have to change the settings for your computer system &
Dell web cam central. Go to start> control panel> sound>
recording .. on mine there is an option for Microphone "High Definition
Audio Device" ... that is the built in mic. You want that for your
default & apply it. Also .. as a side note .. I disabled the web cam central Live! microphone completely from this window. Then open Dell web cam central & go to the
"Record Video's" option. In the middle of this is an orange button with a
video camera icon. Next to this on the same button is a little arrow
pointing down .. click that. Under microphone .. choose Microphone "High
Definition Audio Device" just like the sound option in control panel.
I've done this & it's completely fixed. I can record videos with
sound & use my built in mic in voice/video chat.
what chat are you using? have you used your webcam for this chat before? sounds like the config in the chat program is wrong and it's not loading your cam. try opening the options in your chat program and check the camera settings, it may just be a box that isn;t checked. if it works on your computer it should work in a chat if it's config'd right
