When I sought to use the drive on my workplace computer, all files displayed in compressed (.vem) format. When opened, I found gibberish and couldn't use the files. In my home computer (original file source, the flash drive files display and open fine.

Is your usb drive locked? The micro vault classic has a lock switch on it. This prevents you from writing data to it. Please make sure that is not in the lock position. Then plug it back into your pc and you can go ahead and format it.
