My PS2 Slimline goes black or freezes or skips during gameplay.
Last night I tried to play a game and 1/2 the screen was normal and half the screen was completely black. When I got to a spot that I could save the game froze. I tried a different game and that game started fine and then turned completely black and froze.
I had trouble before with a game freezing and read that I should clean the lens so I did that and it seemed okay for a while but now that game freezes sometime and skips sometimes. This game is Guitar Hero World Tour and I know a lot of people have trouble with that game. So far GH has not had a black screen but the other games do.
Any ideas. I bought the Slimline refurbished from a used game store after the original PS2 I had died. I don't think I have any kind of warranty since it was refurbished.
Re: My PS2 Slimline goes black or freezes or skips during...
No you prolly dont have a warranty at all. I dont on my refurbished disk. As far as the game not playing it has to do something with the Cd. Alot of times the people that sell the disk send it through a certain kind of scanner and it erases or screws up the CD somehow. U might wanna take it back and get it replaced if its not to late.

You can adjust screen display settings while playing PlayStation 2. Press the PS button on the Wireless Controller during gameplay and then select [Settings], adjust the following settings.
Normal: Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen: Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.
This setting can be selected only when [Normal] or [Full Screen] is selected under Settings > [Game Settings] > [PS / PS2 Upscaler].
Hello. Base on you're problem description, and from my own experience, I believe the problem is with your lens. I recommend that you take a closer look in to it. Take it to your local game store and have it cleaned.
You should check the laser lens when you have the tray open. If there is any dust build up on it, take a can of compressed air and blow off any excess dust. You want to avoid touching the lens at all. If that doesn't help then it may be time to send it in. Call Sony for pricing information at 1-800-345-SONY.
it might be a problem in the wiring which would have to be fixed by an expert. also you could tey cleaning the disk tray using a compressed air can. you can find these cans at most place like walmart or electronic stores.
just take the disk out for a min and give a good wipe and without spittin, blow inside the umd tray. The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
or it could just be the laser. can also try and clean the laser lens.
try to keep the box in a spot where it and the power brick can stay cool.... same thing happened to my first box eventually it got the rings of death like so many other xboxs out there... so if keeping it well aired dont work you need to ring micro soft and have it sent off for repairs before it suffers a system failure
