Method 1:
Transfer the song(s) you want to set as ringtones onto the microSD card
either by connecting to pc via USB or using an SD adapter. Next, Tap on
the Music Player, open the music list, press the menu button and select
PLAY ALL, this will scan your SD card for music/audio files. Once all
your songs have been added to the list, select the song you want to set
as ringtone and click MENU key, choose SET AS RINGTONE and that will take you
to the RIngtone Trimmer, make the ringtone 30 seconds or less, select
Trim and you're done.
Method 2:
Root your HTC Hero, create a directory in your C: drive and name it
HeroRIngtones, HTC, or whatever and put there all the ringtones you want
to be added (30 seconds or less), then open Command Prompt; make sure
your device is connected and already visible. Run the following command
"adb push directoryname/myringtone.mp3 /system/media/audio/ringtones"
and press enter. Do same procedure for all the audio files you want to
set as ringtones.
Browse to the place where you have saved your song. Select options and then use tone. You will get a list of things alongwith use as ring tone just select it and your ring tone will be your media player song.

right click on the mp3 songs there will be one option as use as go on there will be ringtone option click on it then use as ringtone as u wish enjoy it.
it is look like it is psword protected ,or has some kind the buton wich does not let you put/remove song's fom it.try to find that buton or rest to factory seting, format the player.
take all data-backup & get a hard-reset... if you have a virus checking application, check your device for virus/bug ; you can get virus checking applications free from the web for your PDAs... Hard-rest will solve your problems... be sure to take your backup of data & contacts...
