How do I fix when I touch a key to put in information and it prints a different number or letter than the one touched

Here is a way to recalibrate the touchscreen without having to go through the menus:

If your Nuvi has the problem that when you press one key but another key is highlighted, then either your touchscreen is defective or it is miscalibrated.

For example, pressing the letter "A" on the QWERTY keypad, actually highlights the letter "S" or "Q" or "Z". On the non-QWERTY keypad, this may show up as "B".

Method #1: If you can get to the main menu, press the "wrench/tools" icon and then the "Display" icon. Now press the calibrate screen button and go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Method # 2: Follow this procedure if you can't get to the main menu or any menu thereafter.

First, turn the unit OFF.

Nuvi 3xx & 6xx Series: Hold down the on/off power button and don't let go of it.

On the screen it will say "Pre-boot mode"..... keep holding the button down..... after some time you will eventually come to a screen with dots. If the screen says "Loading" and does not go to to the calibration screen with the dots, you will need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable and rename the file "GUPDATE.GCD" within the Garmin directory to "GUPDATE.OLD". Once the file has been renamed, repeat the above procedure.

Once you reach the calibration screen, now you can let off of the on/off power button. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 2xx/2xxW Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold until you see the calibration screen. Note: Some 2xxW models require the procedure below for the 7xx.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Touch the screen anywhere and keep your finger there while moving the on/off switch to left (don't wait for Garmin logo to come up) and then quickly moving the switch the right (lock position). After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 8xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Remove the battery from the Nuvi for at least 10 seconds. Press and hold your finger on screen, while putting the battery back in. The Nuvi will boot-up and you should see the text "Pre-boot Mode" appear on the screen. Continue pressing on the screen until pre-boot goes away and the progress bar appears. Now remove your finger. After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, 14xx, 16xx, 24xx, 25xx Series: Turn off the Nuvi. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then push down on the power button to turn the unit on. Release the power button when the Garmin logo appears. Continue to press on the upper left-hand corner of the screen until you see the calibration screen.

Once completed the Nuvi will display Calibration Complete

This will recalibrate your touchscreen to the LCD display.

If this doesn't resolves your problem. then your touchscreen may be defective.

Garmin nuvi 205w gps black dot problem

Please be more specific. There is a calibration screen where black dots are shown and you press them to calibrate the touchscreen. Is this what you mean? If you press them and nothing happens, your touchscreen may have failed and needs to be replaced.

No signal how do I fix it

You have not said what model garmin nuvi ?
The touchscreen on a Garmin nuvi GPS usually loses sensitivity or stops responding if it's lost calibration.
This usually happens after prolonged usage.
Touchscreen problems are also caused by dirt, smudges and improper care.
If your Garmin nuvi's screen isn't performing as expected, Garmin provides solutions and tips to not only improve the device's performance, but prevent premature wear and tear.
Calibrating the Screen

If the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen isn't working, you need to calibrate the screen.
Calibration resets and repositions the screen for optimal performance without deleting saved settings.
Before calibrating the screen, press and hold the "Power" button to turn off the device.
Pressing and holding the "Power" button again for about 30 seconds automatically displays the calibration screen.
Pressing the dot on the white screen calibrates the touchscreen automatically.

Updating Software.
If The Garmin nuvi's touchscreen is still unresponsive, updating the device's firmware to the latest version can solve operating system problems that lead to touchscreen problems.
Before updating the device's firmware, connect the GPS to the computer using the USB cable. When the computer detects the GPS, the "AutoPlay" menu appears on the screen.
Tapping the arrow on the menu automatically opens the "myGarmin Agent" download page.
From there, follow the prompts to update your Garmin nuvi's software quickly and safely.

Cleaning. In some cases, the Garmin nuvi's touchscreen won't respond to touch if the screen is dirty. Touchscreens are sensitive to dirt and smudges that decrease sensitivity.
If the screen is dirty, cleaning it with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth improves performance.
If the screen is severely dirty, using water, isopropyl alcohol or eyeglass cleaner removes tough stains.
To avoid damaging the screen, apply liquid to a cloth instead of directly to the touchscreen before cleaning it.

Tips.

Refer to your Garmin nuvi's maintenance and storage information found on the device's manual prevents premature wear and tear.
If the screen stopped working after prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or water, the device's hardware is most likely damaged.
In such a case, you need to contact Garmin for additional troubleshooting and possible repairs.
Attempting to disassemble and repair the GPS yourself only increases the risk of damaging the unit even further.
also it could be a battery problem if the nuvi is not getting power ?

When I switch the device on it comes up with press dot screen

Have you tried a screen calibration? Turn off the unit then press and hold the upper left of the screen as you turn it on. A dot will show up on screen and then press the dot firmly as it moves around the screen. When it is done it will say screen calibration complete.
I also assume you tried a reset by pressing the reset button or on the newer units just hold the power button while turning it on for about 15 seconds until it reboots.

I put oin a new address , hit Go and my Garmin nuvi just keeps re routing me back to where I am.

Hi Nancy,

You might try a "RESET" to solve this problem:

Turn your Garmin on WHILE pressing bottom right corner of the screen. This will reset your data back to factory defaults. This will remove favorites, vehicles, etc. - but maps will remain.

Next, install the latest Garmin firmware for your GPS. This can solve a lot of "strange" problems:

Go Garmin's WebUpdater Page, click on "Step 1 DOWNLOAD", from there choose the Operating System on your computer and either run or save the file, install this software and then run the software with your Garmin connected to the computer.

Difficulty typing? Try a screen recalibration:

Turn your Garmin on WHILE pressing the top left corner of the screen. This will allow you to recalibrate your screen and holding the Use a pencil (instead of a finger) to touch the dots for the best accuracy.

If this was helpful, please rate it "4 thumbs up" - Thanks & good luck!
