After installing a 2nd hard drive my computer won't power off. It appears to be shutting down, logs off everything and goes to a black screen but the power supply keeps running. Everything else runs fine just won't shut off. My motherboard is a asus P5ND2-SLI motherboard and I'm running XP. The 2nd hard drive is Western Digital. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

this sounds like you have picked up a virus there are a few that will do this, you will need to reformat the hard drive. or use a backup disc if you have one made to install on computer. make sure you only go into computer in safe mode and use virus software to try and remove it. this virus attacks the startup file on the hard drive, and the reg files allocation. hope this helps failing this the hard drive has wiped its self when it has not shut down properly.
Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan
is not working your PSU is faulty
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or
to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including
the leads from your"((motherboard to your hard drive))"make sure they have a secure connection and
are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty make sure all leads that
are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections
and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could
be faulty a computer
needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads
will end up with a computer errorhope this helps
The first screen (start windows normally etc) appears because the computer ahs not shut down normally before. Since you choose to start windows (normally or last known...) and the Windows logo comes up with the loading bar, this means that the computer is starting to boot. Some hardware or software (windows) problem appears and the boot never ends. Possible reasons: motherboard failure or hard disk failure. A good idea is to re-install windows to check the results. Mention that in case of reinstalling the windows, during the procedure choose to reformat the hard disk so it will be checked for errors and reported.

sound like you either have a dead SATA socket on the board, use another one, or at worst try a PATA hard drive, second thought is possibly go into the bios and make sure you have no previous hardware raid arrays left behind, sounds odd.. but i have seen it cause similar problems before.
Hi, This could be a hard drive problem. The hard drive is looking for the boot sector on it, but the boot sector is broken. Computer shuts down and tries again but your hard drive can't find the boot sector so it shuts down tries again etc.
The most common reason for this problem is that ACPI (the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) isn't enabled. To enable it: Click Start | Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance. Click the Power Options tab. Select APM - Enable Advanced Power Management Support. Click OK.
