Question about Pentax Normal SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lens

1 Answer

New SMCP-FA 50 1.4 will not work on my K100D Super or K10D

I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas.  When installed on her K100D Super the camera will not function.  I tried it on my K10D and the same thing happened.  Displays blink but no adjustment can be made, can not see through the viewfinder, even the flash will not open. It seems to short out all electronics. Is this lens defective?  All our other lens function perfectly with these cameras.

You are probably right - it sounds like it is not connecting right - I would take it and the camera to the store and check out another lens!

My shutter gets caught every once and a while

Assuming you are familiar with the setting of your camera and have used it without issues in the past, the camera should be professionally cleaned & serviced by Pentax or reputable camera repair shop.

It is likely that dirt or oil has begun to interfere with proper shutter operation, or that the end of shutter's life is approaching. If under warranty still, be sure to have only Pentax or one of their authorized agents perform this work or risk voiding the warranty. Regardless of warranty state, this is a replaceable part (if cleaning does not solve the problem) on most dSLR cameras, but may be expensive. Be sure to specify that an estimate is provided before work is commenced - or provide a dollar amount that you are willing to pay.

You can arrange for service by Pentax on this page.

I hope this helps and good luck!

I am having a problem with my new Pentax DA 50-135mm 2.8 lens not focusing

Hi Ally,

It sounds like you may have commanded the camera to use one of the other 10 focus points in the viewfinder. There are 11, total with one in the very center, and the rest around it. It looks like this:

Page 130 of the manual begins a discussion of Auto Focus. Page 133 details how to change the focus point. If you like to center the subject in your veiw finder & pictures, you should select the center focus point if it is set to one of the others. You may still have dark or soft pictures if the shutter needs to stay open too long. You can reduce the exposure time by bumping up the ISO to a value of 400 or 800 or more - as limited by you liking. The higher your ISO goes, the less time required - but the more grainy the image is.

Good luck!

What does smcp -fa mean

SMCP- means: Super MultiCoated Pentax (a term that refers to the anti-relctive coatings that Pentax has been using on its lenses for years F-means it is a lens designed to cover the larger area required of a lens for Film camera use versus the smaller sensor of the Digital SLRs Pentax also makes. Pentax also makes DA lenses , which will only work with their digital SLRs. A- means it will work in fully automatic mode on cameras that have the ability to set shutter speed and F-stop automatically (most modern Pentaxes) It should also be noted that all DA and FA pentax lenses have a modified version of the original Pentax K lens mount, which replaced their first lens mount, the universal M42 used by so many early film SLR manufacurers- this concluded todays pentax lens history

If your lens fails to extend or retract, try cleaning it with a lint-free cloth and some lens solution. If it still won't move, try resetting it. Many cameras have reset buttons that restore the camera to the default factory settings.

this is a very general help i can provide you.

In the manual setting, the aperture will always be stopped down to what ever you have it set at. The auto function holds the aperture open until you take a picture. Your metering may have been effected with it stopped down in the manual setting.

I have an old Pantax 35mm SLR camera (zx5). Would the lenses still fit the new bodies or do I need to purchase an entire new kit?

Nope! Your old Pentax (and Taukimar!) lenses will still work. Any type of "K-Mount" lens will work on a Pentax digital.

The Power Zoom appears to be locked at 80mm.

(I just cut-n-pasted the comment into the solution so this shows up as a solved problem in searches.)

"I've found the solution!
Just goes to show that sometimes it's worth simply calling the importer's service department, who told me in 30 seconds!!
Hold the zoom twist-ring and push, or click it up or down, depending on which way you are holding the lens.
So simple; I even accused him of not knowing what he was talking about.. and of course apologised profusely when it suddenly happened."
