Question about Acer Aspire™ T180 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Acer T180 will not boot or power on. It has a bad attitude!

I booted up my acer T180 for the first time in several weeks (possibly acouple of months). I downloaded some Microsoft updates, and then told mycomputer to restart.

The computer never restarted. The fans came on, but the monitor never gave any indication that the computer was in operation.

1. Fans came on.
2. The green power light on computer front did not turn on.
3. Nothing showed up on monitor.
4. DVD Drive lights were on, and tray could be opened/shut.
5. When I held in power button, other fans would power up.

I disconnected all USB devices, this had no effect.
I disconnected hard drive, this had no effect.
I disconnected DVD drive, this had no effect.
I removed BIOS CR2032 battery for several minutes, no effect.

Basically, the computer acts as if it is dead, except that the fans will operateand the DVD drive is powered and can open/close.

The computer is not reaching a stage where it is outputting to the monitor. I want to punch this computer in the face.

The hard drive won't even start spinning, so there is no way to use F2 or anything else. There is no boot process at all. Thanks, though!

No warranty. I tried booting up using the graphics card I installed about a year ago, and removing that card and using the onboard graphics. Neither method caused any output on the monitor at all. The monitor is not receiving anything from the computer no matter which way I hook up the cable (but if i unhook the cable, the monitor does display the "cable not connected" message.

As far as recovery disk, i have not tried yet, if I can find it, I will give it a shot.

Also, when you say "hardware problem with one or a couple of the controllers on the board", you are talking motherboard, yes?

Thanks everyone for their help, I am going to keep plugging away on this problem, and will update... thank you!

If the computer is still under warranty return it. This is a hardware problem with one or a couple of the controllers on the board. Or if you have a solid state drive you won't hear the drive but that still means that your display is not working. If you try to put a graphics card in do you see anything?

yeah i am thinking that the mother board might have some issues with the agp or pci or whatever type of controllers.

you should try resetting the BIOS (either by changing the right jumper, or by pulling out the CMOS battery, or whatever religious ritual your brand of motherboard requires, such as sacrificing a chicken on the keyboard), because it sounds like you've got a problem with one of the busses (e.g. the PCI bus, the AGP bus, the Chicago-bound Bus, or whatever). It may only be a software problem, which you might be able to get rid of by resetting the BIOS; but if your computer still displays the same vital signs as an ashtray, then you've got a more serious problem on your hands.

Try tapping F2 as it is booting to get in safemode. If that works we're in business.

If that is the case you might be just looking at a power supply. They are not too expensive and can be found at a pc store near you.

You could have virus on it that is causing it not boot up, or the motherboard could possibly have some blown capacitors on it around the processor

Im guessing the PC starts up flashes the lights turns off and repeats?

If so the hard drive boot sector is gone or damaged. Try to boot from the Windows disk.
