Ok..........As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.

Open up the hood, slide the ink cartridges to the far left, and check for a small silver piece that has dislodged from the far right side of the interior. You will probably need a flashlight to see. It is about the size of a folded paperclip. Even if it is still in place, remove it anyways because the printer identifies it as an obstruction. It serves no purpose so do not feel apprehensive about doing this, it will fix this problem.

Error 5100

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

This error means that there is something obstructing the printing process. Check inside your printer through the gears that you can see under the lid. There should be something obstructing the gears such as dirt or a foreign object . check there is nothing even some paper caught underneath the rollers that I had to jiggle around to even see. Check VERY thoroughly.

What does 5100 mean in canon mx310 series printer

There are several possibilities.

Have you changed out a ink cartridge lately? You can try and do a power reset by holding the power button for about 1 second until the machine powers down. You can also remove the power plug. Wait at least 30 seconds before turning the printer back on. Then wait for the printer to fully cycle before trying to print.

There are other possibilities. Let me know what has happened just before you saw this error code and I can give you more information.

There are a error massage check printers 5100

Error 5100 on Canon's usually means there is an obstruction in the printing path stopping the paper feeding properly, or the clear film sensor the cartridges use may be dirty.

Check inside your printer for any foreign objects and also see if the clear film sensor is dirty. Clean with methylated spirits very gently if you have to.

Hope this helps.
