Shredder Runs Without Paper In It

I was sitting at my desk and the shredder came on all by itself. It seems that the paper sensor failed. I don't know if it is the light source (an LED?) or the light sensor. Before I try to take it appart, does anyone know if the parts are replaceable! Good thing I was near it when it failed. I suppose that the thermal circuits would have shut it off after a few hours, but if not I could have had a major problem.

The suggestion that I change the sensor is a good one, but the question was "Are The Parts Replaceable?" The external parts of the paper sensor are buried deep inside the cutting head compartment, along with the logic and power switching associated with the sensor. I would prefer not to get in there to find that they were never meant to be serviced. The unit still shreds, it's just inconvenient to have to turn it on and off every time you want to shred something.

I understand that the problem is either the light source or the sensor (and yes, I cleaned both the sensor and the light source) The original question was ""Are The Parts Replaceable?"

I can still use the shredder, it's just an annoying manual process. Before I take it apart, I need to know that I can replace the bad part without having to re-engineer the circuitry.

First thing you should try is to clean the paper feed sensors with a qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol.if that doesn't help you have a burnt out sensor and need to call manufacturer to check availability of replacement parts.

I suggest you call into Fellowes customer service and ask us. Be ready to provide model number and serial number. They are located on the white sticker with a barcode somewhere on your unit. you can provide model by looking for either the CRC# or Parent part#. The serial is the letters and numbers located under the barcode.

HELP - MY SHREDDER WILL NOT TURN OFF!

Hello. These automatic shredders are so handy. You put a piece of paper [or two or three] in the paper entry area and it automatically turns on...........how convenient.................BUT eventually, most of us run into the situation where the @#$%^ thing won't automatically turn off..........and then it seems like we either unplug it every time, or start shopping for a replacement.

NO LONGER......Read on.......In most instances, a shredder that continuously runs isn't broken, it merely needs some TLC. Most shredders, contain two tiny sensors near the paper entry area. These sensors are designed to shoot signals back and forth enabling the shredder to turn itself on when paper enters the machine. After the paper has made it through, the sensors then tell the machine to shut off.

Sometimes these sensors can malfunction. This can happen when oil, paper dust, or debris covers the sensors. Covered-up sensors essentially tell the shredder that paper is entering it, thus causing it to continuously run. While this problem can occur in both cross- and strip-cut machines, it tends to happen more often in cross-cut units because those units are oiled more frequently and create more paper dust than strip cut units.

THE FIX: wipe the debris or oil or ink off the sensors. Here's how to do it:

1. Unplug your shredder and look for the sensors in the paper entry area. In the center of the opening, there will be two things that look like marbles - these are what you're looking for. (Please note - if your shredder has a safety flap over the cutting mechanism, you may have to lift it to find the sensors.)

2. After you've found the sensors, use a slightly damp cotton ball or Q-tip to clear away any oil or paper dust. You can use a small pair of needle-nose pliers or tweezers to clear away any large chunks of debris.

If your machine is a model that lacks the electronic sensors - such as a smaller deskside shredder designed for home use - you can still fix the problem on your own because those machines have mechanical sensors. These are also located in the middle of the paper entry and they look like small plastic dividers. (In most of these models, the sensors are white, but they could also be gray or black.) The sensors are depressed when paper enters the machine, which causes it to start shredding. Once the paper is gone, the machine stops.

1. Sometimes bits of paper can weigh down on the sensors, thus causing the machine to run non-stop. But it's easy to clear up this problem by doing the following:

2. Unplug the shredder and locate the sensors.

Remove any debris. Use tweezers or pliers, if necessary, but be careful to not press down too hard on the sensors to avoid damaging them.

Once again, after you remove the debris, plug your machine back in and you should be up and running.

Happy shredding everyone!

Why does my shredder run when there is no paper, but stops as soon as I insert paper into the slot?!

You may have paper stuck in the blades and its jamming.try forward and reverse to free it up or you may have the head unit on the can faced the wrong way. Pull it out and turn head around and than try. I know on some shredders if the head unit does not fit on the right way it wount push down the safety switch and it wount run.

Omnitech shredder model ot--exc10a , shredder runs but when insert paper to shred it stops, pull out paper and it runs non stop!

Sounds like there's blockage between rollers and it also jams the sensor so auto function stops working. You will need to clear out as much jammed paper as you can using tweezers. Inspect the centre of the feed opening, there should be sensor which must be clear of blockages and moving freely. So clear any stuck paper with tweezers, in addition you can soak any jammed paper with WD-40 and unit should be good as new. Although if sensor arm is damaged then replacement of such sensor is unavoidable.

Spl-1506x shredder only runs in reverse

Daniel:

Unplug the shredder... Take the top off and turn it upside down. Use a screwdriver to take the lower cowling off and look at the motor. If the mounting area where the motor sits looks melted at all, the machine is toast. If the motor mounting area looks good, look at the slot where the paper is inserted... there should be a sensor (that "sees" the paper when you insert it) at the paper slot. Check to see that the sensor isn't damaged.

Fellows C-320/C-320C shredder runs continuously. It will not stop. I have cleaned the paper sensors, and nothing seemed to change. When the machine is on and running, I(Auto On), O(Off), and R(Reverse)...

sounds as if you will need to have the auto feed sensor replaced. if they fail it will just run, thinking it sees paper. your machine is under warranty for three years from the date of purchase. call fellowes and see if they have repair depot in your area. 1-800-955-0959

Only runs in reverse

I just had this problem with my shredder. I think the problem started with a bin that was full. Running the shredder in reverse resulted in shredded paper being pulled up into the slot used to feed paper into the shredder. Some of this shredded paper was blocking the little plastic tab that activates the switch when paper is inserted, so the shredder would no longer start when paper was inserted. I emptied the bin and removed the shredded paper from the feed slot, being careful not to break the plastic "sensor" while removing the paper from under it. The shredder works fine now.

Runs continuously when in the on position.

there is paper jammed in front of the sensor. it was likely caused by feeding too much paper into the shedder at one time and now a chunk of shedded paper bits it blocking the sensor from seeing that the shedder is clear
