Question about IOGear COMBO ION GHD135C160 160 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Seems to be resetting itself

I have about 30 G worth of pictures on my ION Hard Drive (160 G). All of a sudden I cannot access those pictures. It seems that every couple of minutes, I hear a click like it is power cycling. I have tried "dir" on the drive and my computer says it cannot find the path. When I try to access via Windows Explorer, I get a message saying that the drive is empty. I have put the drive on another computer and tried accessing it there. In this instance I get a blank screen.

Is my data gone or do I need a data recovery service?

im assuming you want to back up your laptop

Determine how much space you'll need to back up your Toshiba laptop's hard drive.

If you are intending to back up your entire hard drive, or have a lot of video and music files you want to save, you'll likely need an external hard drive.

On the other hand, if you only want to back up your most important documents, a USB drive should suffice.

Separate your video, music, pictures, games and documents into separate folders.

Right-click each folder and then click "Properties." Do this for your C: drive, too.

Locate the "Size" or "Capacity" section on the "General" tab.

The number to the right indicates how large the folder is, with all the files included.

This information should give you an idea of what kind of secondary storage system you'll require. If you're looking at over 100GB of storage space needed, you'll probably want an external hard drive.

Purchase an appropriate drive that includes backup utilities.

Some external drives and USB drives come with backup software.

Once you install and configure the software, all you have to do is press a button--either on the drive itself or on your computer's desktop or taskbar--to start the backup process.

Schedule your drive's utility software to back up your Toshiba laptop files once a month.

Your USB or external drive should be plugged into the laptop on the scheduled backup dates.

Store your most important files on an online storage facility, such as Mozy, DropBox or Toshiba Online Backup.

In case anything causes damage to both your laptop hard drive and your spare drive, you will still be able to access the files online.

My USB port on the hard drive seems to have broken off inside. What can I do? There is another DC port next to it, is there any way of connecting the hard drive to my laptop via this?

Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.
Purchase a new "empty" enclosure, for about $30, and "transplant" your disk-drive into the new enclosure. All your files will be accessible.

Maxtor 160G hard drive - access denied

The drive is dead. Here is a solution that is not guaranteed to work but worth a try. Place the drive into a Ziploc bag and then place that into 2nd Ziploc bag, place into the freezer for 48 hours allowing the drive to get good and cold, once the drive is cold before removing from the freezer get computer ready to back up the files needed on the drive. I have had this work but only for about 30 minutes at a time max so plan on 15 - 20 as your target. Also keep in mind I have never had this work more than once so target critical files first. If this does work please rate.....

Go to Disk Management. check the size of the drive you're having problem with. If it still shows that there are files saved, right click the drive letter you're having problem with. My Computer doesn't recognize Ion 320 GB Harddrive w/Tri select

This isn't a solution but might help...

I have the same drive... with mine it recognizes sometimes but usually freezes my computer when I try to write to the drive. I thought it was the actual hard drive, but that works fine when installed in my tower... I now notice that one of the small components, component L14, is actullay missing a corner!!!! Like it chipped off! I'm blaming that. It seems to be part of the usb/firewire section of the mainboard. I'd like to replace it... does anyone know what that component is?
