You can get the data back. But I hope you did not install anything and _only_ formatted the drive.

First of all, put this hard disk in a PC that has windows xp already working fine. If you are able to see this hard disk, that is if it shows in the Right-clcik My Computer -> Computer Management -> Disk Management, then you will be able to recover.

Download this utility:

It's a single file once you uncompress it. You might need winrar from to unrar it if you do not already have it.

Once you unrar it, extract it to your desktop and just double click it. It has many utilities but just click the Data Recovery button and everything is self explanatory from there. Read the quick user guide and user manual if needed.

Hi, My Buffalo portable HDD Model HD-PE500U2 was connected to my machine and got locked because of power outage. Now, when I reconnect the HDD, it says, "The disk is not formated. Do you want to...

I feel for you. Since you said it was a backup I would highly recommend getting another hard drive and backing up your data from the original machine before you lose it all, then work on recovering the existing one.

When the power went out it probably wrote garbage to the MBR and possibly other areas. If the data is as important as you say, I would contact a professional, one mistook could make the data unrecoverable.

I would suggest Electronic Restoration Services ( at 1-888-355-001) or any other realiable service.

You can always try rewriting the MBR with one of the many utilities available but be sure you know what you are doing. Only you know the value of the data on the drive.

Good Luck,

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.
