Question about IBM ThinkPad 600E 2645 Notebook

1 Answer

08611 Error I put my 600E on but it comes up with this error code. The trackpoint only goes in a straight line across, but can move it with an external mouse. Can't get past the error to get the laptop on. Any ideas? Thanks Roy

I'm not sure about the 600E or that error number but the same F1 or ESC key sequence might apply(from your other post)! Good Luck! regards, Babb

My laptop IBM ThinkPad 600E 2645 by turning on shows the notice Error 129 in system board. The laptop cannot be put into service.

The ThinkPad error code 129 is a motherboard problem. This is a component failure on the motherboard and cannot be fixed easily.
The 600E is a very, very old laptop. I suggest you don't spend money on it, put your money towards a new or later model laptop.

Error 161 and 163

The ThinkPad 600E is at least 5 years old? If so, have you changed a RTC Battery (CMOS Back-up Battery) 3V Button cell type that goes somewhere inside the Laptop and sits on the System/Motherboard. I hope you put it back the right way polarity is critical. If not then i have no idea to what it is, though someone will be able to help also you might want to try http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/ibm-thinkpad-bios-error-code/ good luck, Bastian

Trackpoint Malfunction

You are lucky that you have IBM machine. They provide a facility of RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS.

Using it all such misappropiate settings will get cured and your machine will work like a BRAND new machine.

Also regarding your mouse sensitivity, you can go to CONTROL PANEL & then to MOUSE settings & there you can customize your mouse settings (sensitivity also).

Getting message 8611 failing to start

The 8611 error is telling you that the trackpoint or keyboard for the Thinkpad has stopped working

You can sometimes get the 8611 error:
  • If an emergency power down is made by switching the system off during or while an application is open, then immediately switching the system on creates a 8611 error.
  • Repeatedly turning power off and back on without properly shutting down or allowing the system to shut itself down.
The Solution:
  • Wait at least 6 seconds or longer after shutting down the system or before restarting to correct the 8611 error
If the above doesn't work you will have to disable the Track Point:
I did the following procedure from information I found on the Internet, and it worked, only you will need to use a mouse with the laptop from that point on, you are basically turning off the trackpoint which is causing the error.
There is no guarantee this will work because it may also be the keyboard itself, so do at your own risk.
First go into the system config utility which you get forced into after the 8611 error is reported
Then go back to the main menu and enter the config.
When there press the control key and the d key at the same time..
Find and ensure you are on the -base 128 cmos- page.
Look for ofset 20h, (maybe a different number ##h) and in the1st column and 3rd row and change the number to 01. On my Thinkpad the ofset was not 20h but 12h., so my ofset number wasn't the same but it is still 1st column, 3rd row.
When finished changing the number to 01 press the F2 key and then the F3 key.
Then exit out and restart the computer.
The computer should reboot with the trackpoint disabled. And you will need to use a mouse with the Thinkpad.

Startup related

This is a trackpoint device error (the eraserhead "mouse")

Here's a website that has collected information on how to disable the device:

Thinkpad 600E

IBM Thinkpad error code 19990301 is a Hard-Disk sector problem. Basically your hard-drive is faulty and you need to replace it. This is why it wont boot; because the area of the hard-drive that stores data is damaged.

ibm thinkpad does not boot My IBM Thinkpad 600 (Type 2645-310) stops and hang during bootup. What happens is: 1. LED test, then green Power on and orange battery/charging 3. RAM OK (Responds when I take out /put in different amount of RAM and displays correctly. I have 128 + 32 removable, + 32 internal not possible to take out) 2. I can hear fan, CD drive and evt diskette drive. If I use diskette drive the LED wil give 1 blink, if I use CD drive it will give 14 blink. 3. No cursor seen, but this is displayed: Upper left show the amount of RAM present: 196032 KB OK Upper right IBMs logo in blue; IBM Lower left shows "ThinkPad(R)" in large letters and red dot over "i". 4. Then a "rrrrrr" sound from the loudspeakers after a while, this is in fact 28 clicks shortly after each other. Then nothing more happens. Diskette and CD drive is OK (But can not be used because bootup is never finished). I hear CD speed up and then down again but nothing more happens. No effect in booting with bootable diskette or CD, "Live Linux" CD or else. Backup battery OK (3V) and if I take it out I will be asked for correct date and time when Power on. I can then use keyboard or TrackPoint to set date and time, and after that hangup at the usual point. Starting without battery, HDD, CD drive and removable memory sticks makes no difference in symptoms. Pressing and holding F1 before and during poweron and startup (in order to enter BIOS and selftest) has no effect. I could not find help on IBMs home page, but maybe I did not look at the right place. Is somebody able to help me?
