I bought my Xbox 360 2 Christmas's ago. I have the three lights error indicating general hardware failure. I just read that Microsoft has extended the warranty 3 years for this particular failure. I need information on what I need to get this console fixed and where to take it in the Erie, PA area.

When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a "general hardware" failure or "core digital" failure, three flashing red lights appear (known as the "Red Ring of Death") around the power button, in lieu of the four green lights indicating normal operation. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, in which the screen has strange, spontaneous graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, the sound is frozen and changed to a strange, static-like sound, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the general hardware failure occurs, when the user attempts to turn the console on, and the three red lights are seen and the console will not function.
this sounds like it will error e74 which will need a reflow
but dont overheat with a towel as this will cause more problems
The three flashing red lights indicates general hardware failure. You have three year warranty for your device, you might as well have it replaced as no particular solution is out yet for the infamous red rings of death...
Two red lights generally indicate hardware failure. Two green lights indicate two controllers are connected. Both green and red lights will not be lit at the same time. The green light in the middle indicates that the console is turned on. For more help deciphering red light flashing errors, see this guide HERE.
...the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is
associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a
result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error
message under our three-year warranty program for certain general
hardware failures that was announced in July 2007. We have already made
improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an
occurrence of this issue. Detailed information related to the Xbox 360
warranty and resources for those who require repair can be found at http://www.xbox.com/support (http://www.xbox.com/support) .
hello. CAUSE The three flashing red lights may indicate that your Xbox 360 console has experienced a hardware failure. Please read the letter that discusses warranty changes for three flashing red light hardware failures.
If you suspect that you are experiencing this issue, you can submit a console-repair request online. However, before you submit your request, we ask that you first try the following two steps to verify that you are indeed experiencing this issue:
1. When you turn on the console, examine the light on the power supply. The power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the Ring of Light flash red. If the power supply light is not green, please follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
906101 Xbox 360: The power supply light is red 906102 Xbox 360: The power supply light is orange 906103 Xbox 360: The power supply light is not illuminated
2. Turn off the console. Wait 10 seconds, and then turn on the console again to see whether the symptom occurs again. If your console continues to display the three flashing red lights, your console may have to be repaired. For information about how to start the repair process online, please visit http://www.xbox.com/support, and then click Console Repair in the upper-right section of the Web page.
Note: The online console repair service is currently not available in all countries or regions.
If you would rather contact Xbox Customer Support directly, please visit http://www.xbox.com/support/contact for information about how to do this.

One red light signifies a major hardware failure or system error , depending on which hardware failure or system error it is depends on how the problem can be fixed but in some cases there is no easy recovery and the console must be repaired or replaced. Two means the console is overheating and must be switched off and left to cool. Three, the infamous 'Red Ring of Death', means a general hardware failure and the console must be sent to Microsoft for repairs. All four red lights simply means that the console cannot detect its AV cable.
