If the clicking sound is coming from the drive itself, this isn't a good sign- often indicates the drive has failed, and apart from repair, or sending it into a file recovery specialist center, any files on it could be beyond recovery.

Have you tried plugging it into another machine?

Your IT guy at the office is trying to open what, exactly? And what is making a clicking sound, the hard drive?

I personally own the same and unfortunately experienced the same also... the integrity of files saved in external HDD is not that good compaired to Internal HDD.... Better backed-up your files before you will be sorry!!...

I have a 453 GB Lap Top, 500GB Hitachi will not back, says no more space, I was told to delete all info on 500GB and do new back up, How do I delete info from 500GB?

Open up Windows Explorer (the file manager).

Right-click on the 500GB drive (drive D: or whatever it is) then click Format.

If it says the drive is in use, make sure you close all other Windows Explorer and Command Prompt windows and try again (worst case, reboot then try again).

I have an external 500 GB HD. I try to plug it in to my laptop and the light on the front just flashes. The laptop doesn't recognize the HD, and there is no sound coming from the external HD

For that make sure usb cable works fine.
Try with different usb cable.
Also connect usb cable in different usb ports of computer.
Right click on my computer then click on proeperty then hardware->device manager.
Then click on sign of usb controllers then uniunstall all usb drivers 1 by 1.
then restart computer.
Then check.
If still not recognized then when you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode.
then check.
in normal mode again.sometimes harddisk need to start in safe mode .
Let me know if you need more assistance.
thanks.

I have a western digital hard drive

To save your data from a bad Wd Ebook you need to download UBUNTU and burn it to a cd. Boot from the cd. Do not install Ubuntu just click try it out. When it loads turn on your Ebook and iit should appear on the desktop. If not click the places tab on top and find it there. Right click the EBook and mount it. Now you have access to all the data on the ebook. If you have enough space n your cpu hard drive save it there, if not you will need another source large enough to copy the data to.. I have used this method to save many hard drives, flash drive and other unreadable media. if the drive is totally toast you are out of luck but this method works most of the time. Any questions drop me an email.

SimpleTech 320GB Hard Drive- unable to detect the device

I had a similar problem with a SimpleTech 250g Pininfarina USB drive.
I went through the drivers, the power supply, the USB cables, and the various
computers, USB cards and Operating systems.
Finally I opened the case and found the disk drive was mounted too far
forward, causing the IDE connector to barely touch. I loosened the mount screws,
slid the drive back towards the connector, tightened everything down and it works.

My glyph is not seen on my mac

If the drive is connected via firewire, power the drive. If the drive powers and you can place your hand on it and feel it "spinning", and still it does not mount. Try a different FW cable. If still no mounting action, place your ear on the drive to hear any grinding or clicking. If the drive sounds to be operating normal, open disk utility.. Hard drive/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility The drive should appear in the left pane under your computers hard drive. You should see the button to MOUNT it on the top right. Hope this works

Hadrive Making Knocking Sound, does not function

the knocking sound means that the 'arm' on the inside of the harddrive is going out. unfortunately there's nothing you can really do about it, you may be able to get your data off, but otherwise I'd say it's trash. sorry
