1. please check if the charger socket in you car is working.
You could use other deivce like a MP3 player for charging in the same socket.
If other device is not charging then the problem could be with the socket.

Check the fuse associated with the car charger.output

2.Looks like Nuvi charger has a known lose contact issue. It would be advisable to let Garmin know the issue and they will send a new one.

I push the on/off button and nothing happens. (it is brand new and I am trying to acquire the satellite)

Hello,

With the unit being brand new, the battery will require charging.
It is recommended to charge the battery for at least 4 hours before running it on the batteries alone.
Leaving it connected to the vehicle power cable while driving around will usually be enough to charge the unit after a day or so depending on how long the vehicle is running. Alternatively an AC power adapter can be purchased to keep the battery fully charged while away from the vehicle.

How long does it take to charge my new Garmin gps in the car?

It shouldn't take too long maybe 15 to 20 minutes tops....

There is a fuse in the car cigarette adapter plug at the silver tip end of the unit, if it doesn't charge I would check the fuse

Be Careful the Silver tip end of plug is spring loaded

If you charged your gps by your computer using the USB port it takes a few hours

Battery

The unit will take a very slow charge via your computer. I tell most people no it doesnt charge VIA your PC just because it takes soooo long. I recommend getting a new power cable from GPSCity. Just call them up or follow the like to the cable you need.

** This cable is for the Nuvi 200 series GPS units

Do i have to charge gps in car before first use . brand new want to make sure i dont ruin life of battery

No, When your using the GPS with the car adapter, its running on an external power source. The battery charge status is unimportant at this point. To charge the battery just move and hold the on/off switch to the left until the screen says "Charging Battery" and then release the switch.

Can not charge only works plugged in

Your Garmin nuvi 5000 will never charge because it has NO internal battery. The only time it will operate is when it is plugged into a 12 volt power source. I have one and it really doesn't bother me at all. I bought a second cradle and a 12 volt adapter for use in the home.

Nuvi 260w no power.

Yes, you need to charge it. USE the charger that came with it for best results. Some off brand chargers will NOT work.
You plugged it into your car and nothing? Even if the batteries are bad it should still work. Is it the Garmin charger?

Charging unit with AC adapter

I have a 100v A/C power / charger unit for my garmin C340 GPS that I use to charge my Garmin's battery every day. I can use thj adapter to run the GPS, or just turn it off and let it charge the GPS. But it connects dirctly to the Garmin GPS unit, not to the cradle like the Cigarrette lighter unit does. .

Garmin c340 does not charge

I came here looking for solution and tried the "press eraser in bottom right corner and turn on" but didn't work for mine BUT if you look at the face plate (the part on the front that says "Garmin",) just under the word "Garmin" you see a small indent in the plastic, useing your finger nail, gently pull upwards and the face plate will come up. Also, be gentle while pulling the face plate being careful not to break it. ( I advise that you use your nail and not anythng that might scratch the plastic if you are intending on returning the unit, cause they may suggest that you tampered with it and that "voids the warrenty") Anyway, look at the USB plug (above the ON button on the side) and you see a tab, press it and the unit will reset.

Seems to me that with all the problems Garmin has had with their units freezing up that I should have found this solution on the garmin site! To think that there are people who will throw there unit away because of this problem OR who will pay 150.00 bucks to get it fixed through Garmin.
