****...same problem. Running Vista Business edition. The computer freaks out/freezes/takes forever to shut down. When it comes back up registry errors are reported, or the hdd just won't boot. Went through two SATA drives with the same effect. The HDDs work fine on other computers.

I have the same problem with this board. Seemingly at random, Windows Vista will freeze, freak out, or take forever to shut down. Upon restart the HDD won't boot or Vista reports registry errors. Restart enough times and everything works fine again...for a while. Went through two SATA HDDs(One Maxtor, One Samsung) thinking they were actually bad - but they work fine in other computers. The first time it was XP - same problem.

You're effectively, rebooting, your hard drive when you disconnect the cables and reset. I don't think its a hardware problem because it boots up when reset the cables. Before you spend any money on the controller or new cables, just try Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Too many files and gaps on your HDD could cause hangs...not a solution just a suggestion. If that doesn't help any then you may need to buy new SATA cables and see if that works.

The Biostar MCP6P-M2 Motherboard has been reported to be delivered with defective SATA cables. Multiple cases of hard disk drive boot and read/write problems have been reported as solved by replacement of the included SATA drive cables with almost any other manufacturers' cables.

Anyone solved this issue by changing sata cables? I did install a new HDD with a brand new SATA cable, and nothing.... the BIOS finds the HDD; but I cannot access it at all in Windows XP Professional. I did boot, and reboot, and changed drivers, uninstall, and reinstall, etc etc. Still no result.

Wtf? I think it may just be the **** Biostar SATA cable. Try replacing with another cable. Never would have crossed my mind. How the hell do you screw up a ******* cable, Biostar?

The new HDD uses a SATA data interface as well as a SATA power interface. You will need a SATA cable as well as a power supply that supports the SATA power connectors. Since this is an older machine you will probably need to buy a SATA cable and a Molex to SATA power connector. This should cover any cabling issues that you are having.

Black screen on boot on biostar mcp6p m2+

That board has a built in video card if I have the right info. If you are using an external video ie plug in card then you need to make sure the onboard video is disabled or that the plug in card is designated as the main video card. Not doing either of those will cause the black screen.

M/b cannot recognize SATA HDD

This is common to other mainboards, the SATA controller have it's own BIOS, but it only works correctly using two identical SATA HD's at same time for data protection purposes. If you have a free PCI slot there are expansion cards based on VIA chipset VT6421 with 2 internal SATA ports, other external and one IDE. See one here

Can I use a SATA2 HDD for P5GL MX?

just like usb1 and 2, the sata2 harddrive will simply clock down to match the speeds of its port. the connections for both types are identical so there are no possibilities of problems...other then the motherboard saying "nope i cant read that", which most likely wont happen.
ohyeah...ram does the same thing too.
but honestly, if you're using a mobo thats only sata1 and you've got the dough for a new 1tb harddrive, you should consider upgrading your motherboard first...much better money spent
