Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try: 1. Check physical connections. a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet ?i? LED on the front of the router should light up. b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up. 2. Access the router's web-based utility. a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key. c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password". Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default. To reset the router: a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds. b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in. 3. Configure the router. If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection that does not require a login, please follow the steps below: a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab. b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?. c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button. If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection that requires a login, please follow the steps below: a. Click on Basic Settings. b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?. c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box. d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply. 4. Configure the wireless settings. a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup. b. Change the SSID to any unique name. c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit". e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number. Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection. f. Click Apply button to save the changes. g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle. 5. Power cycle. a. Power off the modem, router and computers. b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking. c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online. If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below: 6. Connect wireless computer to the router. If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below: a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer. b. The CD is not available for installation is it necessary? I have all of the cable if the Yellow cable connects to the cable router what does the white cable on the wireless router connect to. Thank...

If the cables supplied have RJ45 connectors then they are used for connecting and configuring the wireless settings in Netgear router and to connect the Netgear to the DSL modem foe Internet access.
Most likely the color of the cables is not important.
To configure the wireless settings, connect a cable from one of the LAN ports (not the WAN/Internet port) to the LAN port on your computer. You may remove this cable after configuring the wireless settings if you want to connect to the Netgear by wireless only. You need to connect other computers to the Netgear's LAN port with a cable if they do not have wireless cards installed in these computers.

The other LAN cable is used to connect the Netgear WAN/Internet port to the DSL modem so you computers can connect to the Internet via the Netgear router.

Follow these instructions to configure the Netgear router.

How do i set netgear 614 with a password

To configure the Netgear wireless router, connect a LAN cable from the Netgear LAN port to the LAN port on the computer.
Then open a browser and enter the Netgear's configuration URL
http://192.158.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = password
You can now change the default password and configure the wireless settings eg. SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption.

I use AOL as my ISP, with British Telecom supplying my telephone line rental. On Friday 2nd my internet connection kept dropping out, and then eventually stopped connecting altogether. My original router...

If BT tested the phone line is OK but did AOL test the connection to the Netgear router and get the IP address of your Netgear router.
The phone connection is OK but the ADSL connection from the telephone exchange may not be working, that is why you are not getting an ADSL light.

Ic help

Scenario 2 to 4: Scenario 2) The modem does not have an Ethernet port. The modem is a dial-up modem for traditional dial-up service. To use the Router, you need a cable/DSL modem and high-speed Internet connection.

Scenario 3) You cannot use the DSL service to connect manually to the Internet.
After you have installed the Router, it will automatically connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), so you no longer need to connect manually.

Scenario 4) The DSL telephone line does not fit into the Router’s Internet port.
The Router does not replace your modem. You still need your DSL modem in order to use the Router. Connect the telephone line to the DSL modem, insert the setup CD into your computer, and then follow the on-screen instructions

Problems with netgear wireless router

picolas and nannysboy,

You can setup your router any way you like after accessing it. You don't need software for NetGear. All you have to do to access the control panel is:
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Type in this ip address - http://192.168.1.1
  3. Configure the router as you see fit. It's fairly simple and has built in help guides.
If you cannot connect by wireless, do the above while connected by a LAN cable (looks like a telephone cable, only fatter and wider).

The router should be connected as follows:
  1. WAN port directly to cable/dsl modem.
  2. Any port (1-4) running out to your computer.
Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!
