Question about Hotpoint WMA50 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Shipping Bolts? I recently installed a second hand WMA50 washing machine and today found two coarse threaded 13mm headed screws broken behind the machine. They would have been fitted behind two plastic covers on the rear of the machine. Are these shipping bolts that should have been removed before use which may have been put in by the previous user or may even have been left in from new? Hope you can help. Thanks in anticipation. Sounds like it is shipping screws from description.
As long as the m/c was kept upright during removal, then should be no prob.
If you hear any unusual noises when it is going, stop it and remove top cver and look inside to see if anything looks loose or broken.
Plz rate my solution.

Zanussi rear counter weight screw mountings broken

If this is a GE top load washer, I have see it a few time's. You can go to your local hardware store and get 2 new 4 inch bolts and nut set. and reattach the counter weight. The old bolts were just screwed to the frame. With today's appliance's they use 1/32 to 1.16 sheet metal... it don't take much to strip that out.

Next time post brand and model number...make's it easier.

I have a Whirlpool top loading LSQ9659LW1 washing machine (bought in March 2004) with a problem we haven't found mentioned in other queries. When this machine was new, we had service people out after...

I think it is unlikely that the guy stripped the bolt, but I suppose it is possible. I would drill out and install a heli coil in all of the damaged holes, then you can use the same size bolts.
My thought is the trans became loose, and the movement sheared the bolts. If this is the case, you will find them easily removed, as opposed to damaged threads. Check the trans for fluid and easy function. Many trans systems drop some oil....

Walking machine

Check the transport bolts have been removed from the rear, you should see 3 or 4 bolts on the back panel, 13mm heads, going through plastic tubes, remove the bolts and the tubes (if still there) and fit the plastic covers. If the bolts have been removed already, then there could be a problem with the springs or shock absorbers inside the cabinet.

Remove screws holding door lock and push lock through. Remove soap drawer & take out screws behind it.Carefully bring panel forward & slide to right to remove(Take care here with board &wiring)Remove screws holding front panel & lift front panel & remove it.Remove band from seal and your there.Note locating slot on seal. If possible get an extra pair of hands to hold panel with board to avoid damage.

Shipping bolt installation

A total of four shipping bolts need to be installed: two longer ones on the bottom and two shorter ones on the top. Each shipping bolt consists of a metal screw inside a plastic cylinder which fits between the washer suspension and the back of the washer cabinet. The metal screw pulls the washer suspension against the plastic cylinder which, in turn, is pulled against the rear cabinet, thereby securing the suspension against the back of the cabinet. The Whirlpool part number is 285955. These bolts can be ordered from various suppliers for $20 - $30. To install these bolts, you will need a 13 mm wrench and a flashlight so you can see where the bolts screw into on the washer suspension.

The procedure is as follows:
1. On the back of the washer, remove the 4 plastic covers over the oblong shipping bolt holes. Carefully pack these covers with the water and drain hoses as they will be needed when the washer is re-installed in its new location.
2. Using the flashlight as a visual aid, look inside the oblong holes and identify the area on the washer suspension into which the shipping bolts screw. It is a white plastic part that is not directly behind the the shipping bolt holes, but is slightly above that level.
3.Look at the shipping bolts. The bolts described above (Part number 285955) have a a plastic arm at one end . This arm must be sawed-off for installation on older machines. You will have to determine whether or not the arm needs to be removed.
4. Starting with the bottom two holes, carefully slide a shipping bolt through the hole toward the front of the machine. Angle the bolt upward toward the screw mating hole, and carefully guide the bolt into the hole. Use the 13 mm wrench to engage the bolt into the mating hole.
5. Make sure that the plastic end of the bolt is closely seated against the back of the washer cabinet. Using the 13 mm wrench, screw in the lower two bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the upper two shipping bolts.
7. After the plastic part of all 4 bolts has been firmly seated against the back of the washer cabinet, carefully tighten all 4 bolts.
8. Go to the front of the washer and push on the drum. The drum will rotate but it should not rock. If that is the case, then you are done.
