Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Dryer motor has trouble starting

It's a Whirlpool LGQ8858HQ1 gas dryer. Recently, for all but the lightest loads, when we start it it makes some odd noises, then it shuts off for a couple minutes. Next, it attempts to start up again, and either kicks on correctly and works fine for the rest of the cycle, or makes the noises again and turns off for a few minutes in another repeat of the process. We've had to reduce the load by about half to get it to work.

I'm guessing there's a thermal limiting switch or something that's tripping due to excess load on the motor. The question is, what do I need to replace? Motor? Switch? Something else?

I do have a new belt/roller kit that has not been installed yet (dryer was squealing a month or two ago but that stopped and I was too lazy to proceed with parts swap).

Suggestions for how to proceed?

Thanks in advance!
Marc

Yeah, over the past weekend I swapped the motor. While I was at it I put in the parts from the belt/roller/idler pulley kit that I had on hand.

The old motor could hardly be turned by hand, whereas the new one spins freely. I'm sure I'll save on electrical power usage with the new motor.

The only snag in the job was that the blower wheel, attached via left-hand-screw threads, was impossible to get off. I tried all the tricks I found online, but the part started to crumble when I tried detatching it. The bushing with threads in it was actually so married to the screws on the motor shaft that even after I cut the wheel off, and removed the motor, and had full access to everything, I still couldn't get it off (I tried just for fun).

After reassembling the dryer worked a treat for one load, then caught on something and made an awful smell before the thermal cutoff kicked in. Turns out the blower housing was full of junk. Nails, rocks, safety pins, you name it. Probably from the original owners! I hadn't noticed it before. I cleaned all that out junk and all is well now.

Dryer only works until it gets really hot

Hello Joyce Dozier,
Some of the older dryers are the best and if you can keep them operational.. they can last a very long time.. Based on your problem description, you more than likely have a thermal cutoff switch that is cutting off power to the heater.. Over time, these thermal switches fail from age ( I can relate to that as well).. Anyway, please provide the Whirlpool model number and I may be able to track down the most likely suspects for you.. You , however, will have to rope a friend or family memeber in to replacing it... It could also be the themal sensor on the motor too..
I would unplug it and open it up to gain access to the motor.. and vacuum away all lint that may have accumulated around the motor and other areas... Provide the model number ( normally found on a tag someplace on your dryer..) and I will help you find a solution..
Regards
Rick

We must wait one hour to dry 2nd load

you have a bad motor the internal overload is cutting it off when the motor gets hot and that is why it takes about a hour for it to cool down before it will come back on the fix is replace the motor which is very expensive or buy a new dryer
