Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Hi, do i need an electrical cord to plug in to an electrical outlet to connect my syncmaster to my powerbook so that i can display on both monitors? or should the power from the powerbook be enough? thnak...

The monitor needs its own power supply, so it will need an AC outlet.. All the computer can do is send out the video signal to be displayed. If you were hoping to use the external monitor somewhere where you won't have AC power, you're out of luck. Sorry.

I am trying to connect my PowerBook G4 to an external display. The external display is my new Vizio HDTV. I am using the DVI port output through an adapter to HDMI and plugging the HDMI cable into the...

One possibility is that you don't have your TV set to the right input, check to make sure that your TV is on HDMI 1 (or whichever channel your laptop is plugged into). If that doesn't fix your issue, go system preferences > displays and then from there you can assign the TV as a mirror of your desktop or a second monitor.

Display problem

There are severals ways to determine what component is at fault, through some of them may require equipment you may not have on hand.
If the lines move, appear, and disappear as a result of changing the hinge angle, the problem is most likely in your LVDS cable, which is not an expensive part.
If they don't, then you need to attach an external monitor using the short white video dongle that came with your PowerBook. If the lines also show up on your external monitor, your logic board is at fault, which is an expensive fix and probably not cost-effective for a machine of this vintage. If the lines show up on the built-in LCD but not the external monitor, the problem is with the LCD panel itself, which is a medium-expensive part.

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

Suchisart,
If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

Don't forget to vote and leave us some feedback. :)

My laptop screen isn't working is it broken or have i just touched a button?

Easiest solution would be that the brightness has been turned all the way down. Try the brightness keys which are F1 & F2 on the PowerBook. Other more complicated problems are the display ribbon cable is bad, or the video port, or there is a display invertor on the motherboard that can go bad. The inverter can be replaced - there are instructions on the web for that. Have you tried hooking your computer to an external monitor? Is there a picture on the external screen?
