Sounds like the the signal isn't connecting the two devices. Is this a recent problem or an old one?

Locate your router as far away from other equipment as possible.
Temporarily move or disconnect any other wireless devices in orneer the room.
Set the router to another wireless channel.

Two things to check. One make sure that your wireless phones are not 2.4 ghz. and check to make sure that you do not have any other wireless devices on that Frequency. When you say you cannot use the internet, does the status indicate that you are connected? and what is the signal strength? Is it on the default channel?

I need the security key to my existing wireless netgear router.

The Security Key is normally used for Wireless routers to protect your connection from any unauthorized use. As you have said that you do not have the Security key for your router with you, the best way to connect your ACER laptop to the Netgear router is by asking your Wireless service provider to reset the security key & freshly reentering the same on both of your HP & ACER laptops.

........."Scenario: your neighbor is puzzled that his broadband performance is slow.He gets an expert like you to come and check whether his system is working properly. He is told "there's your problem - the people next door are using your connection and they seem to be downloading stuff using Kazaa and Limewire all day and all night. . the problem with that is if the two of you have the same brand of router (say Netgear), with default settings, then it won't know which is your "NETGEAR" network, and which is their "NETGEAR" network. That is why (apart from a little added security) I say to change the SSID."
"All wireless routers I am aware of have the facility to change the SSID (it usually defaults to something like "NETGEAR", or "3COM").But it is still a good idea to secure your own network - and change the SSID. If you don't change the SSID, then any neighbours with the same brand of router will have the same SSID, and your laptops won't usually know which one they are accessing. And setting the router to not broadcast the SSID is good too. But it is still a good idea to secure your own network - and change the SSID.
