I'm having the same problem with my Dell XPS M1710, I used Disc Copy to copy my old 80gb Hitachi to a new 500gb Western Digital. Afterwards, it still only shows the 80gb from the old drive. There is no unallocated space in the Disk Management utility as well.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!,

You have 2 or more Partitions on the HDD.

I once had 32.7GB showing instead of 320GB and went into Device Manager:

( MY COMPUTER> MANAGE> DISK MANAGEMENT (ON THE LEFT)> MEDIA)

And look for your HDD Drive then Delete the 2nd Partition and Re-Format the HDD

Hope this helps --P3NGYJ03

Toshiba hddr160E03X hard drive showing full capacity at 147GB

Manufacturers rate the capacity of their hard drives in an unformatted state. When you format a hard drive the actual capacity drops approx. 10% and in this case it leaves you with 147Gb capacity.

Hi there , i have an acer travelmate 6592 laptop , the original 80 gig hard drive crashed , and i dont have the recovery disc , the hidden partition wont re install either , i have bought a new 320 gig...

You cannot get the full 320Gb capacity because the BIOS can only support a maximum of 127Gb.
You only hope is a BIOS firmware upgrade that can support 320Gb. Check out the Acer WEB site to see if a BIOS upgrade will solve your problem.
OTHERWISE
Install a 127Gb hard drive in your Acer and put the 320Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive because it is not affected by the BIOS limitation.

How to copy mpeg file to pendrive. when i am trying to copy 5.58 gb file to 16 gb pen drive it shows drive is full

I think it could be due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, thats why user can't see the files and the space available for use is less than the capacity.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and seclect SHOW HIDDEN FILES. It may show the hidden files. Otherwise, if you dont have any vital data on the drive, just format it. Make sure you backup all your data and verify it before formatting the drive. Hope this would fix the issue and you would be able to enjoy the full capacity of the disk

Let me know if any further clarification is required. Hope this helps! Dont forget to rate the solution!!

My 250 gb hard drive is only showing capacity of 127gb

Firstly install SP3 if that doesnt work you need to update your bios to get large disk support. If you dont want to perform any of these fixes you could simply split the drive into 2 or more partitions to access the full 250gb. Goto Control Panel/Computer Management/Disk Management you will see in there the missing gb's of your drive. Simply right click it format it and give it a drive letter.......Cheers from Scott

What type of hdd does a HP omnibook 6100 F3260KT support and can it hold more than 30 gig standard factory as current HDD heads are locking up

Hi,

The type of hard drive you want is a 2.5 inch IDE (ATA) hard drive.

As for the HDD capacity I've worked on an Omnibook 6100 which had a 100GB hard drive so i expect it can possibly take up to 320GB but don't quote me on that.

Regards.

DELL notebook hard disk upgraded to 320GB?

In my most humble assumption, I see no problems doing this. At the most a BIOS upgrade may be necessary; however a quick check at Dells support and drivers site will most likely show that your device has the latest BIOS available.

Dell's support is quick to state the original capabilities of their devices as shipped. Not downing any parties, they would rather you buy another product then continue with your previous purchase.

Let us know if you require any further assistance.

Simpletech 320 gb

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).

HARD DISK CAPACITY PROBLEM

When your hard disk capacity says 320, that does not mean 320 GB fo free space, Total capacity is 320 GB, from this space required for the partition table, boot sector, etc will be taken, Dont worry only the available free space will be shown.

This is not a problem, so dont worry.
