Can you connect it to your computer? Does it come up when you do? If so, and if it behaves normally then the issue is with the power cord/ 12 volt adapter cord you use in your car.
Replace the power cord.
Your nuvi 5000 does NOT have a internal battery and that means that you cannot operate it unless it is connected to a 12 volt power source. Connecting it to your computer via USB allows you to install map updates, check for firmware updates, etc, but you will not be able to use it as a gps while it is connected to the computer. There is nothing wrong with your gps.
To use your gps in the home you need to purchase a 12 volt adapter, there are several types, plug the adapter into your wall outlet and connect your gps to it. If you can sit near a window it will help in picking up the satellite signal. Just keep in mind that you cannot connect the 12 volt power supply and use the usb cable at the same time. Enjoy your gps.
Three years ago I performed a temporary repair to the power cord on my motorcycle. Someone unfamiliar with the connection pulled the cord instead of sliding it. The hard plastic flange pulled away from the molded rubber plug. I glued the lower flange back to the plug with superglue. It's still working.
Could be the cord or your car plug. Does it fit snug? I have a 1996 Acura TL and the way the cigarette lighter is designed, I have to give it a bit of pressure so it makes good contact. try your unit in another vehicle and see if that solves the problem. If so, it's your car's cigarette lighter connection.
Check the power cord fuse and the input jack on the board and make sure their are no broken lead connections ( cold solder joints ) to the board. If you have a volt meter, you should be able to read 12v DC to the plug. Good Luck
