Any size hard drive should be compatible, but you should get the same connection type and bus speen if possible (ATA/133). If you get one from a different manufacturer, you'll have to install the bios update that comes with it and set the jumper to slave per the instructions that invariably come with any "add-on" hard drive.

Better to buy a new hard drive. IDE drives nowadays are mostly found on surviving old pc's. They are slow and usually of low capacity. I feel that any money spent would be better directed at replacing the hard drive.

Replace the cable you are currently using with your printer cable and see if it is the cable if that is not the case I would open the case, and check your connections on the hard drive, there is a chance it might have come loose.

Hello....first question, is the Vantec IDE to SATA compatible with windows 7 64-bit? Thank you Ted

Win 7 should recognize the drives. However, whether your current hardware will recognize the drives is another question.

I've seen posts where it works in some situations, and not others. Amazon has 10 reviews with ratings running the gamut. Seems to be a "Hit or miss" proposition.

Can Vantec CB-IS100 IDE to SATA converter works to convert Motherboard ide port to sata or it made only for hard drives,cd-roms and DVD rom ?

It attaches directly to the drive, whether it be IDE hard disk or CD/DVD, and is used in boxes that already have sata connectors on the MB. Connector attaches to drive, cable from connector attached to drive to sata connection on MB.

Note: Sometimes these may not work (for a variety of different reasons).

Here is a link to one seller of the converter, read through the reviews. While it works well for most, sometimes there are issues.

Difference between ata and sata hard disks

ATA, or (PATA) hard drives use the older "seatbelt" 40 or 80 pin ribbon interface cable, whereas SATA is fairly new using the small, thin interface cable found in most computers manafactured in the last 12-18 months, hope it helps

Maxtor one touch usb hard drive

I would remove the hard drive from the case and slave it to my primary drive inside the tower. If it is out of warranty then it is likely old and about to die. Maxtors do not exactly have a reputation for longevity. Your best bet would be to image it and restore the image on a new drive.

Maxtor Hard Drive Crashed and want to buy identical drive

Instead of performing surgery on the hard drive, I'd suggest an alternate solution... Download the "Get Data Back" program from www.runtime.org; there is a version for drives using the FAT32 format, and a version for drives using the NTFS format, so be sure you download the correct version for your 300GB HDD... GDB can NOT help you if the HDD is PHYSICALLY damaged; the clicking noise you've mentioned COULD mean that the drive is beginning to fail, though you might STILL be able to retrieve the data on the drive with GDB before the drive fails completely... The "Get Data Back" program is FREE to use; you will ONLY have to pay for it AFTER you know if it can retrieve any files for you. It will create a bootable floppy disk that can read ANY functional hard drive, whether or not the drive is detected or recognized by a system BIOS. Again, GDB can NOT read data from a physically defective HDD, but as long as the drive is functional, GDB will show you all the files it CAN retrieve... Once you pay for the program and enter the activation code, GBD will copy any files it has recovered to the new HDD. Keep in mind that GBD works on ANY functional HDD; GDB does NOT require the drive to be recognized by the motherboard BIOS, and does NOT require ANY operating system to be installed on the drive. GDB is self-booting; as long as the drive can spin up without disintegrating, GDB will provide a list of any recoverable files it locates on the drive. GDB works even if the File Allocation Table (for FAT32) or Master File Table (for NTFS) is corrupted or missing, so as long as the drive is readable, you have NOTHING to lose by trying to recover your data with GDB... The website is very informative, and if you have any questions not covered by the FAQ, you can call Runtime and speak to someone in Tech Support (the phone number is listed on the main webpage). If GDB can recover your files, you will be able to copy your data to your new HDD WITHOUT performing HDD brain-surgery, and WITHOUT voiding the warranty on your new HDD... If GDB can NOT recover your old files, you'll know that the old HDD is physically damaged, and you'll be no worse off than you are right now... remember that GDB is FREE to use until you KNOW for certain that it can recover your data. If GetDataBack DOESN'T work, you don't pay a dime for it; if it DOES work, you'll never want to be without it again...

Installation of external hard drive

The drive should not be set as "master" if your not booting from it and only using it for storage. Master means the bootable disk that holds the operating system. You should change the setting to slave or cable select. You can format it, but chances are it is already formatted and ready to store. Good Luck, Tim
