My canon ZR500 won't be recognized by my laptop.

I HAVE WINDOWS VISTA AND I BOUGHT A DV CABLE THAT CONNECTS TO THE DV PORT ON MY CAMERA AND USES USB TO CONNECT TO MY LAPTOP.
WINDOWS VISTA WILL NOT RECOGNIZE IT!!!! =[
ALL IT SAYS IS THAT IT'S AN UNKNOWN DEVICE AND THAT I NEED A CD TO DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE. BUT IT CAME WITH NO CD.
UGH.

I am having a similar problem. I have Win XP. I have tried attaching to 5 different model of laptops.

XP (no service pack) - recoginzes the devices but cannot capture video to PC

XP sp1 - will not recognize the camera

XP sp2 - will not recognize the camera

XP sp3 - will not recognize the camera

I am beating my head against the wall. I have tried different pcmcia cards and new firewire cables but no progress. It appears my problem has to do with Win XP.

You need software to recognize it. Do you have video editing software in your computer?

SOURCE: My Mac does not recognize my Canon HV 30 DV when i connect the FireWire.

I've been around the block with this for days, including a fresh installation of the software on my MacBook Pro. Sigh.

Here's what seemed to work:

1) Reset Vixia HV30 (tiny reset button behind the battery). Did not change any settings on the camera after that.

2) Installed Canon's software that dropped some canon-related files in Library/Quicktime folder.

3) Opened new iMovie 6.0.3 and Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 projects (a) FCE (using Easy Setup in FCE) to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (b) iMovie 'HDV 1080i'.

4) Connected 4-pin --> 6-pin firewire cable out of the camera to a bus-powered external drive and from the drive, firewire 800 --> firewire 800 --> MacBook Pro 10.5.8.

This was a last-ditch, Hail Mary effort. It worked, and the camera showed up in the System Profiler firewire window, too, whereas it had not before all of the above. Still does not show up when hooked directly from the camera to the FW 800 input, but at least I can capture now.

ZR500 doesn't support windows 7 64bit. Your camcorder will say DV-in if plugged into any such input.

Can get mt canon zr500 camcorder to get reccognized on my laptop.. i have windows vista on my laptop...i'm trying to transfer my mini dv tapes on my canon zr500 to my computer..what do i have to do?

You have to use a firewire connection in order to transfer your videos. The cambera will not transfer the videos through the usb ports. There is no specific driver for Vista, and this isn't a driver issue. Use your firewire port and cable, and you should be fine.
Good luck,and hope this helps.

do yuo have an external hard drive connected...that will interfere with the connection sometimes, hdv/dv should appear in solid whilte letters unders stereo1 in the lcd on the camcorder screen, and what version of vista is it and is the firewire cable plugging directly into the pc...if it doesnt work in one port try another in different location on it.

I need to import video from my canon zr500 to my pc

Hi!

You can import videos from your camcorder to your PC using a DV cable. Check this page from the user guide of your camcorder.

Basically, you need a firewire port and a DV cable. Most computers (new ones) already have firewire ports (or 1394 ports).

I hope that helps.

Good luck and have a nice day!

Canon zr500

The ZR500 has a firewire port that is best for tranferring video to your pc, so a firewire cable would be needed -- and you would need a firewire card in your pc to accept it. It might also have a USB port (don't have it in front of me right now). I've never used USB to transfer video, but I think it would work fine.

Canon MV800 - FireWire connection

firewire is also called 1394 or dv port-card can always be added to older computer to support-cables are 4 pin to 4 pin or 4-6 pin-cam is always 4 pin -mac and most towers 6 pin-laptops are 4 pin-look for a port that looks like usb but has a trapezoid shape end
