Question about Nikon COOLPIX S60 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Bad photo quality

I just bought the Nikon S60 and I cannot take a good picture to save my life. Most of the pictures are in low light areas but there has got to be way to take a good picture in the low light. Some of the reviews are telling me that i should not have gotten this camera.

I am taking them indoors and they really are terrible. I am really contemplating on taking it back. I have played with many settings and the best setting that i have found is the Indoor/Party setting but it is still terrible.

  • devanthompso Dec 31, 2008

The photos are very pixely and not very clear at all. The pixel setting is on the highest. I am familiar with taking pictures in low light but i am finding that the pictures are fairly consistent even if the light is good. I have a minolta 7D and i can take great picture in whatever light there is with adjusting a few things.

Can you tell me what is wrong with these photos? When you say "they are really terrible" it doesn't tell me in what way they are bad.

Taking good photos in low light is actually a very difficult thing to do. This is not a particularly good camera for low-light photography.

I can help more if you can give me more details about the type of photos you are trying to take, and the nature of the low light - e.g. outdoors near sunset or after dark, or indoors.

The Konika Minolta 7D is a DSLR. With the DSLR you have a much bigger sensor, and can use much bigger lenses (with larger apertures - lower f-stop numbers) to gather light to the sensor. This allows the DSLR to take much better photos in low light. You will never get the same quality out of a small pocket camera like the Nikon S60. Hand-held non-flash photos in low light with this camera are going to have the flaws you have noticed - especially in the darker areas of the image. This is digital noise caused by amplifying the signal from the sensor as the camera processes the image with the high ISO setting.

You said you are sure that you are using the highest picture quality settings. The next thing is to change the ISO - this camera's "high ISO" does not produce images with good quality. The camera automatically uses a high ISO setting in low light, you need to tell it to not use high ISO by setting a lower ISO value. When shooting with a low ISO setting in low light, you need to use a tripod, and your subject can not be moving.

If you need to take hand-held photos, or your subject is moving, then you need to use flash with this camera, or else use your 7D.

Can I transfer a video on my Nikon cool pix 301 to a still photo

Your camera can't. The only way is to put the video on a computer or tablet and use a video editor or picture editor. Be aware that good looking video's give very bad quality pictures. It has to do with the coding of the frames.
I found some links (you too could have with Google) how to do and what program you can use:
How to make photo from video
How to pull still images from your videos
This last one gives you an explanation in youtube. just a few minutes.:

I have a nikon coolpix s60 and when i go to view the pictures, the screen turns black and i cant turn the camera off unless i pull the battery

What name brand memory card do you use? I recently discovered myself that Nikon only supports SanDisk, Toshiba, Panasonic and Lexar. Try taking out the memory card and take pictures without the memory card inside the camera. If you can view the picture saved onto the camera memory then you will know that all you need is a new memory card, with one of the above mentioned name brands. Hope this helps.

Hello, P'Hendy
This can be caused by these things: 1. Bad Camera settings. Make sure to set picture quality to highest and set your flash correctly while take pictures ( or just set it in auto). 2. Bad The printer. Have you use good printer? I suggest you to use printer with capability up to 4800 dot per inch (dpi) 3. Bad ink and paper. You should use good quality ink and photo paper.

I have a Nikon Coolpix S60 and need to have the date and time stamped ON my photos. My camera is set to date and time but it doesn't show up on my photos, can you help?

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with the image in what's called the EXIF data. The software you use for printing the picture should give you the option of printing some of that data on the picture or in the margins (or on the back, if your printer can do two-sided printing). Please refer to the documentation for whatever program you're using.

Nikon DX40x not taking pictures

First, the r09 refers to the amount of memory buffer photo storage is available. That's to say that 9 photos can be stored in the memory buffer, while the latest pictures are being written to the slow camera card. It's bursting 9 photos. Depending on your image quality and type, this will be a different number.

Second, make sure you are in the P or Auto mode while testing, or clarify what mode and settings you have. A picture won't take on my D300 if my lighting is too low for my current settings.
