HP Pavillion 9730us media model, with B-ray drive will not play, says there is no disc, then tells me I can't play B-ray on this computer. Does it just not work, even though they're selling it for laptop use?

  • Anonymous Dec 31, 2008

i have the same problem the only thing is that it'll ask me if i want to update but it doesn't do anything...this is frustrating...why bother putting blue ray when you can't even use it

  • grignardo Jan 01, 2009

same dam thing. even if you let it do the upgrade it doesn't help. This sucks I bought it to play Blu ray discs and it cant play a damn thing. Also no support at the HP website of any help at all.

I have two of these machines and the blu ray does not work on either one, the exact same problems described above have cost me many hours of headaches trying to get it to work on either machine. Blu Ray capabilities on this machine is a big scam.

I have the HP dv7 notebook and it won't play BD DVD's either the title screen comes up but it doesn't allow you to do anything else. The first time this happened I thought the movie I had bought was possibly bad. So I went and got another, same result. Looks like it's getting returned.

My problem is that my HP laptop will play old Blue Ray discs but not new ones and I can't find any updates to drivers (everything claims to be up to date) and even the Blue Ray disc I purchased informs me that older players will need to be updated and directs you to the Blue Ray website but nothing there seems applicable

The problem is QuickPlay. Some discs work, but those that didn't, played just fine on my PS3. I had to buy Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 Ultra (10 Ultra also plays Blu Ray), and now, they all play on my HP dv4 laptop. Updates won't matter. Don't use QuickPlay, it's very "fical". Hope this saves you time & frustration. It's not you, it's not your Blu Ray drive, or drivers, it's simply the software/program (QuickPlay) that is the problem.

I want to build a class-action suit against the BluRay Association for these BD discsor against HP for not supporting the BD player in my drive, as I have the exact same issue. Men Who Stare At Goats and '9' won't play, my last two from NetFlix. I patched up QuickPlay, but it continually asks for an update to plays these discs that it never finds. I shouldn't have to buy additional software to play newer discs; that's an actionable offense of negligence on someone's part. I think someone should be accountable for selling a BluRay drive that won't play every BluRay disc.

The video hookup doesn't have anything to do with it. It's all due to the ever-changing proprietary nature of BulRay, and that older BluRay players become defunct as new version of the discs are released.

  • TheTechMan72 May 26, 2010

Glenn, HP wan't help with this issue. They're refusing to update the drive even though it's from them. They've said CyberLink will eventually put an update out to allow the new versions to play. The issue is related to new functionality on BluRay discs and the fact the hradware manufacturers don't want to support old hardware when they can get you to buy new hardware.

When you hook up your laptop to your tv press the function key "fn" then press f4...thats transfers the video to your TV...I had the same problem but that should fix it for you.

Is your dvd Blue ray rated ( ie does it support blue ray ) if so you need the firmware update from Hp.com software & drivers. If this doesn't work you need a replacement drive.

My blu ray 3d dvd player will not show picture on blu ray discs only sound but will play regular dvds correctly

The video for blu ray disks come out of the HDMI port and that has to be connected to the TV for video. If it is connected, make sure the TV is switched to the correct HDMI port on the TV (assuming you have a flat screen HDTV).

Panasonic BD35 won't play blu ray discs, but will play dvds

You may have come close to what the issue is---Blu Ray for several design reasons is much more critical than DVD---seen a lot with this issue----either a dirty or a failing optical pickup in the unit---I know as when first started seeing it in our shop changed a few and since under warranty found the answer--optical unit was the problem---shortly after that they started just exchanging the cheaper units.

My toshiba BDXK100 won't play DVDs other than Blu-Ray

There may be a issue with the assembly, blu-ray plays with more precision and speed, for some reason it is not slowing down to play the regular DVD's may be a padder motor problem.

Windows Media Player does not play Blu Ray discs. You need 3rd party software such Cyberlink Power DVD. Follow that link and you can download a 30 day trial.

My Magnavox bluray disc player NB500MG9 will not play bluray dvds. Please help

My Blu-Ray will not play x disc
A Blu-ray player can play DVD or CD and still not play Blu-ray. It may play Blu-ray but not CD or DVD, or burned discs. This is all caused by the 'optical' a part that reads the disc in the machine. Your player will need service as a Blu-ray optic cannot just be 'dropped' into a player.

Incompatible Disc in Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-Ray Disc Player

I had the exact same problem as you did... I bought the Sharp Aquos 42D85X which came with Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-ray Disc player. could not get brand new blu-ray movies to play and i found it froze everytime after 10 secs. I phoned sharp who basically were no help watsoever! I then went and returned my blu-ray movies back to the store thinking it was a problem with the discs.. The people there were extremely nice and since they had a display model of the BD-HP21X instore they offered to test the movie on it to veroify whether it was the blu-ray player was the problem or not. Turns out its a fault with all of the BD-HP21X models. So we then ended up returning it back to the store we bought it and exchanged it with the older model (BD-HP20X). I now have no problems playing blu-ray movies. Although another suggestion is to perhaps download the lastest firmware update & see if that resolves your issues.
