I have the same problem. I correctly installed the correct 1gb ram module, the system is operating however the system is only recognizing 448mb. Have been corresponding with Gateway but now they say that something must be wrong with the RAM slot. They are not helpful. This is very frustrating I agree !

    P.S. I'm using Window XP

Same problem. I have the correct memory, it is correctly installed. I have re-booted and played around with advanced system settings. I've also downloaded the latest motherboard driversfrom Gateway site.

I've seen this problem posted on several sites but no found no workable solutions so far. I'd try a BIOS upgrade if I could find one (only Gateway reference to a BIOS upgrade is for Vista - seems odd).

I bought the right ram today. 1 gig. My PC wont boot up with it in. I got on teh support chat with gateway and they told me to call a service tech.

What is up with this? I really would like to get it up to 1 gig!

Make sure that the ram is pushed in all the way and also that it is the right ram. This is what should be on the package that you bought, if none of this matches you bought the wrong one.. DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) SO-DIMM

Please repost if this doesn't solve your problem

I have a Gateway 838GM. It has 4 slots for RAM. It came with 1/2 gig RAM (2 sticks, 256 Megs each). I tried installing new RAM- 2 sticks, 1 gig each. If I replace the original 2 sticks, the computer...

Here are the specifications of the Gateway 838GM: You will have to replace the existing memory with thesesettings only: The machine comes with: 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB PC3200DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR Nowyou can only upgrade to 4.0 Gig total. I would recommend going to this link and order the correct memory foryour computer I use them quite a bit. http://www.memorystock.com/memory/Gateway838GM.html Rob

Gateway wont take new ram???

Was the memory made for that specific model? I know that on Toshiba laptops sometimes you have to buy the memory that was specifically designed for that model. You can always try a website like kingston. They may make the memory specific to your laptop mode. If you would like more help please feel free to reply.

goto the gateway site and check what memory type you need.
If you upgrade to 1064Mb that will increase the performace of your machine

Upgrade?

Generally you can add more RAM, However, there are too many details that are needed about your system in order determine if an upgrade can be done.

Suggest you call Gateway Support.

Upgrading acer laptop RAM

Hi,
You Can Actually Upgrade This To 2 Gig Memory.
Each Slot Will Take 1 A Gig Strip.
I,d suggest Buying another 256 mb Strip, To Put Into Slot 2.
Or Buy a 512mb ( Half Gig ) Which Will Give you 750mb With your Existing Strip Already In There. ** Recommend 1 Gigabyte Max** 2 gig of Ram in This Baby Would Probably Start Glowing.
You Can Buy DDR/266/333 In 256/512/1 Gig Strips. These Are Commonly Known As SD-RAM-Modules.
