The only proper way to ensure a complete clean install of Windows (**) is solution 2 on this posting. I would also suggest the NTFS file system in lieu of FAT32 if the Windows OS supports.

If you can identify the drive manufacturer, and go to their website you should be able to find some free testing and maintenance utilities for your drive model. Amongst those should be a utility to wipe the drive nice and squeaky clean. And after all that you know the condition of the drive. i.e. bad sectors etc.

If you have a disk for your anti-virus program, there should be cleanup utilities there too for cleaning a drive squeaky-clean.
Boot from that CD and check out what options it offers.
You paid for it, make some use of it.

If you find my suggestions to be helpful, please share with us some details so that others may benefit from knowing the whole story. Thank you!

  • Files will start to load from the CD to begin the installation.
  • Eventually you’ll be asked if you want to install Windows XP. Just hit Enter.
  • Next is the End User License Agreement or EULA which must be accepted to continue installation. Press F8 to accept, F3 to bail out now.
  • The next screen displays the available partitions where XP can be installed. Select the one you want and here you should delete your previous OS installation by Pressing D (Delete the Partition), then Press L (totally remove the files) tap that Enter key again to move on to the screen where you select a file system.

It’s time for that important decision. FAT32 versus NTFS. The preferred choice is NTFS. It allows security features and stability that aren’t possible with FAT32. Apply the knowledge you gained during the preparation phase at this point. Make your choice of formatting options and press the F key to start the process. Once the format process completes the installation will continue.

Cant i get the image on the old hard disk to download?

Use getbackdata for windows
Advanced Data Recovery Software Programs to Get Back Deleted Data

reformat that drive again first and important is to set your partition active to the drive letter exact to what it was before it must be FAT or NTFS with the same active partyitionscheme as before use the getbackdata to recover an image of the output to a clean harddisk with some larger data storage external on your computer for the data output.
If not formatted you cannot get the images from it important how it was formatted is the most important thing reformatting will not destroy the data but will match the program how to handle the data to recover , beware never do not set the output to the same drive where you recover the data from .

IF you used linux photorec or dd rescue or other several tools are there to use,

Hi,

Use another external Hard Drive temporary.
Download GETDATABACK , install it and run as administrator.

Run the program as to :"recover deleted files".
After doung the 3 stages of scan, your files will appear intact.
Save them to another Hard Disk.

Hope you succeed - it needs patience.

My Z100atapi Zip drive is recognized by Windows 7, but the old disks are not in a recognized file format. I need to get the old data ..

Greetings - According to Iomega your 100 MB ZIP drive media should be fine at being at least readable (the Iomega software does not work with Win 7) natively by Win 7 and Vista. Since the drive is recognized I suspect the problem is actually the discs themselves.

It turns out that the discs were not very good at long term storage and are notorious enough to have a term referring to the problem as the "Zip Burp" where:

  • A) All files on the disk disappear
  • B) Just Compressed Formats such as JPG, ZIP, CAB, ECT Disapear
  • C) "The Disk Needs To Be Reformatted" message is displayed or
  • D) files disappear as you click them

The only way that I know to find out for sure if your discs are good is if you can find someone with an XP machine that will let you temporarily install your Zip drive (including the latest drivers) and see what happens.

Good Luck,

Mikeywaf

Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

I put in a system restore disk that was to my old notebook accidentally. Now when I try to o a system restore it jut says "type mismatch D2D32"

Well, you should try reformatting your hard drive chances are the old system restore disk formatted your drive to a different file system. After that install the restore disk that came with your system.

Hope this helps:)

After i have reinstalled windows, i have a problem

you should have formatted the drive first before you installed windows. But then you need all of the software drivers. XP is good, but not that good with drivers.
The files you are looking for will not be in add and remove.
