Question about Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Flash busy signal

I just bought a Canon Rebel XS. When taking several pictures, one right after the other, the "flash busy" signal comes on and it won't let me take any more pictures for several seconds, until the flash recharges. Is this normal? Is there any way to continue to take picutes, even if it has to be without the flash.I hate missing the perfect shot of my children while my flash recharges.

I have the same problem, waiting for the flash....

Mine is a week old and has exactly the same problem: busy signal, no LCD, no possibility of taking pictures. Clearly there is a serious problem with the canon EOS Digital Rebel XS / 1000D and Canon should do something about it. DO NOT BUY IT!

same problem with the busy....but my flash will go off about 4-5 seconds after the picture has been taken. it worked great at christmas and now the picture quality is horrible. Dark and fuzzy. I even reset the camera to its original mode.

Last December we bought a Canon 1000D, and last weekend 11 jan. the same thing happened to our camera. All of a sudden the LCD went black, busy signal in the viewfinder and no more pictures can be taken. But the built-in flash does pop up, because sometimes people say that that doesn't work.
I really hope someone has the answer to this problem!!

I have had the problem with the busy signal before and just had to turn the camera off and on again and it has worked fine. Today I got the busy signal again after trying to take a photo with the flash. This time however The busy signal comes back everytime I restart the camera, tried to take out the battery etc aswell but still with no success. Hope someone has a solution for this!

I'm having the same problem and it's awful! I bought my camera in 11/08. I just called Canon Support and they are emailing me info to send it in and have it inspected (7-10 bus days turnaround - ugh!) I was told by their customer service rep that "it's normal to have up to a 20 second recharge" on this flash. That's bologna! Who can wait up to 20 seconds?! Furthermore, my camera didn't do this for the first two months I used it. Now suddenly it does, and a few times has even frozen the whole camera where I had to remove the battery to get it going again.

Here's the important part...everyone who has this problem needs to report it to Canon. Simply posting the problem here won't get Canon to do a thing. If they are flooded with reports/complaints of this we stand a much better chance of getting results. Look at Epson's printer recalls as an example.

I too have this problem - camera just stops working it is very frustrating when taking pictures at a party!Camera freezes.

i have the same problem!! does anyone know what to so??

  • Scorpion Ent May 11, 2010

I don't really know if this is a solution but if I am not mistaken I read in the manual some where that if it does that and the green dot in viewfinder is flashing it is not finding the focal point of the picture...

i have had that happen may once or twice since i got my camera 12/08 and i at first turned it off and back on and it took fine... then i thought about that and zoomed out and all was fine

This is perfectly normal, the flash uses short burst of electricity that are stored in a large state capacitor. This has to be recharged after so many pictures. You can go as fast as the SD card will allow even if the flash is charging, simply close the flash and continue taking photos without it, no effect apart from loss of some illumination depending on the conditions.

I have a Canon Rebel XS 1000D, I am having issues with my 18-55 lense. When I try to take a picture in AF it flashes but then says it is busy. What should I do

I hate asking a question to answer a question but, did you get a picture after the camera finished flashing busy? Were you using one of the program modes like portrait, close up, landscapes and so on or were you in a creative zone such as manual, AV, TV or P? Here is a good link to a review on your camera http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/eos_rebel_xs-review/ it might help solve your problem. The Rebel XS is a 10.1 meg camera which is a sizable digital file my thought are it could be possible the camera is still writing the file to the media card. If the internal flash was used then the processor is writing to the file and using power to recharge the flash. It could be that the battery is low and it's taking longer to recharge the flash giving the "Busy" warning The Rebel processor is pretty darn quick and it has a decent size buffer so the write speed shouldn't be giving you a problem unless you have put some type of slow media card in it. In that case it wouldn't matter how fast the camera is if the write speed of the card is low. Also the Rebel has several "quality" settings for pictures and the higher the quality the slower it will be to process but, the Rebels processor is darn quick so this shouldn't be the issue

When using Canon Rebel XS sometimes it takes several seconds before I can take another shot. it reads busy. What can i do to correct this. I am losing perfect picture opportunities

This can depend on the picture quality you have selected, try using JPEG only, no RAW. If this is still not fast enough, you can try a faster SD card, going up to a SDHC Class 6. The Canon XS is a low-end of the EOS Digital Rebel and the slowest, if speed is absolutely required past JPEG only and a Class 6 SDHC, your only hope is upgrading to a faster Rebel.
