Right click the desktop, highlight 'arrange icons by' and untick 'lock web items on desktop' if it is ticked.

If you are running XP, click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Follow the prompts and select a bold date back to a time earlier than this problem occurred. It will require a reboot, but stands a good chance of resolving your issue.

It will not remove anything from your computer, but you may have to re-install any software recently installed.

If you get it fixed and then re-install some software, the problem may come back. That would let you know the software is causing the problem.

I want to change my monitor colour temperature

When you use the Colors window to select colors for text or objects in a document, you can also assign a color profile to the document. Color profiles help ensure that the colors you see in the document onscreen match the colors in the document when it's printed or viewed on another computer.
To choose a color profile for a document:
  1. In your document, select the text or object whose color you want to change.
  2. Open the Colors window.
In some applications, you can open the Colors window by choosing Format > Font > Show Colors or Format > Show Colors. In some applications, you can also click a button in the application's toolbar or a settings pane.
  3. Click the Color Sliders button.
  4. Choose a slider option from the pop-up menu.
  5. Drag the sliders or enter specific values to adjust the color.
  6. Click the colored box next to the pop-up menu and choose a profile from the list.
If you open your document and the colors appear in a different shade or hue than you expected, the application you're using might not recognize color profiles. Try using the generic color profiles instead.
In some cases, an application may not open documents that use non-generic color profiles.
You can create your own custom color profiles using ColorSync Utility. For more information, open ColorSync Utility and choose Help > ColorSync Utility Help.

How do I remove the background colour from desktop icons

Just click right on the desktop ..and select desktop , than select on the down page the customize desktop and select web (the one in the right ) ..
If you see a web page checked in the tab .. remove it ..and the important thing ..remove the check mark for the lock desktop items cause this is the one responsible for that color present under the icons..and click apply ..and OK ..restart and repeat the action if it seam not willing to do that ..or select windows XP theme again ..and this way probably will default it ..but the way to remove it to unlock the desktop items ..

Desktop Icons have shadows and a blue box around title. How do i get rid of this ?

This border on desktop icons can be created when the desktop items have been locked, to unlock the desktop web items right click on an empty area of your desktop. Now select Arrange icons by and uncheck 'Lock web items on desktop' if it has a little tick next to it. If you did not have a tick here then Right click on your my computer icon and view its properties, now click the advanced tab and then on the settings button under performance. Now on the visual effects tab scroll down the list of effects to 'use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop' and put a tick in the box next to it, then click ok. This should remove the shadow border from your desktop icons.
