Question about Refrigerators
I have a older kenmore side by side that is not cooling well and i read your posting from a year or so ago. I took the cover off inside the freezer and found that the coils were covered in ice and that the lower heater was blown and the upper one was not coming on either. I guess my question to you is do you know the part number of the heater kit for this model or were I could find it and do you think I should get a timer as well it seems to work when i turn the knob it cuts the frig off but I have not heard it cut off sense i have been having the problem. Thanks for your help you can email me back at firstname.lastname@example.org

You will need to replace the heating element, if it looks blacken, then it's not good. When good, it's a clear glass tubing with a coil that heats up. Call Sears for parts.

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.
