My computer doesn't show D: drive. Device Manager shows yellow exclamation mark on DVD RAM drive. If I un install and then reinstall the drive using Add Hardware Wizard, I get a message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)".
How can I retrieve the driver.

You don't say what the missing or corrupt file is. If the file is something like "C:\Windows\System32\Config\XXX", then buying the CD won't help you.

Try hitting F8 when you boot, select Safe Mode, and boot to Safe Mode. When Windows loads (assuming it does), then try System Restore.

Yes, definitely it will fix your problem. It is asking for your cd-rom because the files are in your Operating System disc. Your windows files now are missing and corrupted. If you have the Operating System disc, you can use that if your computer gets an error like missing and corrupted files or a tremendous viruses attack your computer. It will surely Repair those files without deleting your saved files in your harddrive using the OS disc or Install a fresh copy of Windows that will surely clean your harddisk.

Keep getting this message <window

Hello,
  • "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"

  • "Cannot find hal.dll"
The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears. CauseCauses of the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error include, naturally, a damaged hal.dll DLL file or a hal.dll file that has been deleted or moved from its intended location.Additional causes may include a damaged or missing boot.ini file or possibly a physically damaged hard drive.

Please let me know you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

Ntldr is missing press clt alt del to restart

The NTLDR and Ntdetect.com files are important system files that are used by your computer to start the Windows XP operating system. These files can become damaged, corrupted or deleted for a number of reasons and are usually brought to your attention by the "NTLDR is Missing" error message.

Follow these easy steps to restore the damaged/corrupted or missing NTLDR and Ntdetect.com files from the Windows XP CD using the Recovery Console.

Time Required: Restoring the NTLDR and Ntdetect.com files from the Windows XP CD usually takes less than 15 minutes

Here's How:

Boot your system  using a Windows XP CD, press any key when the windows display "press any key to boot from CD"and wait for some time, select "r" option to go to recovery console. it will ask you for administrator password too.

When you reach the command prompt type the following two commands, pressing Enter after each one:
copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

In the command listed above, d represents the drive letter assigned to the optical drive that your Windows XP CD is currently in. While this is most often d, your system could assign a different letter. Also, c:\ represents the root folder of the partition that Windows XP is currently installed on. Again, this is most often the case but your system could be different.

If you're prompted to overwrite either of the two files, press Y.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that missing or corrupt versions of the NTLDR and/or Ntdetect.com files were your only issues, Windows XP should now start normally.

That's it.

I get a message that Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM I bought this thinkpad preloaded with Windows XP and do not have an original set...

About the only thing you can do is buy or borrow another Windows XP install disc as this is the only way you'll be able to extract the missing file using the repair console. Hope this helps.

Laptop won't start up in Windows due to a missing or corrupt file

No all you have to do is follow its instructions and use the Windows XP cd and during startup boot to the cd and during installation choose the repair option.

This will not make you lose any files and then you will be able to get in and back to work or whatever it is for again.
