Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a 250GIG iOMagic USB external Drive. It was working just fine for over 2 years I think, this morning we had a black out, everything went down for about 5 hours. My home network came back up, but I noticed the drive was not present anymore on the network. IT is blinking however. I tried changing the USB cables thinking it may have also gotten loose over time, but still nothing. I don't recall if it came with a CD or anything. Any idea?

If you tried turning it off and on and powering it down again and such, it might have failed from the power problem.

Hard drive is full

Firstly you can go into control panel disk cleanup tick everything and clean it up. Open it again and under more options select the option to delete all but the last restore point. Under add remove programs get rid of any programs you dont need. Noe i dont know what sort of files are filling your hard drive whether its full of music or movies or whatever sounds like you could do with an extra drive. External USB drives you can buy a 250Gig drive for around $50 nowdays. So you can transfer a lot of your files to that. Your main drive you should always keep at least 15% free so that files can move about. Cheers from Scott and please vote

I bought 4 G of memory, dell pc tuneup and external hard drive total over $400 from Dell in August. Sales guy from Dell told me it will work like NEW! I am having MAJOR problems last 2 days...Dell won't...

If your computer still works with its internal hard drive, I would say the issue is with the external drive. Try to backup data, then run check disk on it with the option to repair/fix errors it finds. If no luck, try to completely reformat it. If the external drive was purchased as new August of this year, it should have its own warranty of at least a year. This means, if it is faulty, you can get a warranty replacement for it. Just provide the order number or sales invoice number for the drive as a proof of your purchase in the event that you need to get a replacement for it.

ACER Aspire L100 Desktop is dead?

If the hard drive is OK then you can remove the hard drive from the desktop case, and insert the hard drive into a USB 3 1/2" hard drive adapter case, this should come with a power adapter. These are available at your friendly computer shop.
Boot up the laptop then plug this USB hard drive adapter into the laptop's USB port. The laptop will see this as an external USB hard drive. You can open the various folders and files on this external drive and copy the folders and files to the laptop.
You can delete the Windows folder and Program Folders on this external drive to free up disk space and use this as a back up drive etc.
If you are not sure how to remove the hard drive and install it into an USB hard disk case, then I suggest you get a computer savy friend to help you.

Can you recommend the correct external hd to use for this old pc? Thanks a lot.

Anything up to a 1 TB external drive will work fine. You will only have a speed issue as it's USB 1 and not USB 2 unless you put a new USB port card in the machine.

Iomega external HDD not recognized as usb 2.0 (high-speed). PC thinks it's usb 1.1. Worked fine for more than a year.

Hello John7788,

Well this is either....

1. Software
2. Hardware (computer)
3. Hardware (HDD)

If its 1 then just simply re-install the drivers part for windows.

If its 2 then you would be better moving it to another usb socket as it may be just a fault on the single socket. If you don't have another socket then im sorry to tell you it means a trip to the repair shop or getting a new usb card to slot in to the motherboard.

If its 3...well...try the manufacturer for a repair.

Hope that helps you a little.

Hello, i have a western digital 500gb my book hard drive. had a problem with pc yesterday. when booted up, lots of the programs started opening themselves and i had difficulty shuting it down. turned off...

You have experienced a system emergency shutdown. In otherwords, your computer crashed. You can:
1: reinstall your operating system.
2: use a OS recovery disk to reboot the system.
3: send the computer to a data recovery specialist.
4: return the computer if the warranty is still valid.

Good Luck!

Hitachi external usb storage drive comes up fine when turned on, but then after a few minutes "detaches" - then it spins back up and shows up - then after a few minutes detaches again. kind of...

I agree - it sounds like your drive is failing. I highly suggest backing up any important files on that drive before it loses them - I had a similar problem with an external USB drive and only managed to recover 80% of my files before it totally broke down. If it is still under warranty the manufacturer might replace it. If not, it's worth a few bucks in parts. :(
