If you have a digital cable box, turn off the box but leave the TV on. Hit the "Menu" button on the front of your cable box and a setup menu should come on. Use the cursor buttons on your box's front panel to go down to the "Captions" option, which is probably set to "Enabled" and hit the right or left cursor button to change it to "Disabled." That should solve your problem.

That fixed it. Thank you so much.

This worked! There isn't any buttons on our cable box although I pushed "Menu" on the remote and the new menu screen (One we had never seen before) came up. We scrolled to Closed Caption and hit OK. The OK button toggled closed caption on and off. You must hit the power on/off buttom for cable on the remote to get out of the menu. Thank you for saving me a lot of grief!

We don't have a menu button on our box, but we turned off the box and hit menu button on cable remote. The caption option came up and fixed it for us. Thanks

I have no buttons on my cable box, so I just turned it off and pushed the menu button ont eh cable remote and a huge CC menu popped up on the TV screen. and finally got rid of the captions. Thank you so so SO much for the solution. It was driving us crazy. My son fell asleep on top of the remotes and since then, the captions were on and we couldn't get them off for 2 days until I found this answer.

How do I get the closed caption off my tv

I have found that Closed Caption in a function of your television service and not of the TV itself. We have had cable TV and used the menu function on the cable remote to find CC and select 'off'; we now have DirectTV cable TV and use the remote for the receiver to select CC and 'off' on the drop down menu of CC. We get to CC by pressing 'info' on the remote and a list of options appears at the top of the screen, one of which is "CC". Pressing the right arrow key moves the cursor and when on "CC" pressing "SELECT" creates a drop down list; "OFF" is the option to turn off Closed Captions.

Different types TV service (over the air with antenna will likely require changing the TV mode to CC off on none), but if you use cable (Time Warner, Charter, ATT Uverse, etc.) or satellite (Dish Network or DirectTV) then the tuner or receiver will likely have your CC option.

My closed caption is on and I can't turn it off. I don'want the writing on the screen

Did you try turning it off with the closed caption button on the remote? Its labelled cc. If you dont have the original Vizio remote you will need to go into menu-settings and find the closed caption and turn it off there

A black rectangle appears in the bottom half of the screen. The rest of the picture is fine, the sound is fine. The box goes away if i press the menu button - but it comes back again. What is wrong?

Do you have a cable/satellite box connected to this tv?

Try this first it sounds like you have the closed caption turned on by accident.
On the remote press the MENU button.
Use the navigation keys to move the selector to CC and press OK.
This should bring up the Closed Caption sub menu.
Ensure that the closed caption is set to OFF

Thanks,
Robert

Cannot turn off Closed Caption

Here's the copy on CC from my manual LC-32SB23U.

1. Press CC.
This will present the Closed Caption information display.
2. Press CC while the Closed Caption information is
still on the screen.
Press repeatedly until you select the desired closed
caption service.

INFO BOX ON THE SCREEN,
Air ANALOG
Audio : MONO
CC : 1/2 CC1 ------ Closed Caption information
Ratings : NONE

Example:
If a program has three services (Digital CC(ENG), CC1
and Text1), the closed caption display will toggle in this
sequence:
1/3 ENG -- 2/3 CC1 --- 3/3 Text1 -- Off
The CC button keeps a record of the last service
selected in its memory.
If the last closed caption mode (e.g. 1/3ENG) you
selected is not available for the next program, or on
another channel, the closed caption service that is
available is automatically selected, and this service
appears in parentheses, e.g. “1/3(CC1)”.
Closed Caption services that appear in parentheses will
not be stored in the CC button's memory as your last
selected service. Only services that you have selected
with the CC button are stored.

If this doesn't work, the TV may need a software upgrade.
I can get you a copy of my manual LC-32SB23U for you. But, are you sure there is and "A" in the middle of your model number?

Removing closed captioning

Worked it out. The Direct TV remote has a yellow button and that did it. I don't know whether I had inadvertently programmed it that way but problem gone.
Thanks.

Closed caption Problem

If the closed caption setting is set to off on the tv then it would definitely be coming out of your cable box. Usually the Cable box will have the setting in the menu's if not i would definily call your cable company and have them switch your settings for you
