Hp comes with a wi-fi utility and I dont find it very useful, so first, you might want to uninstall the software from add or remove programs and then use windows to manage your wi-fi. Once you connect to a wireless network from 'network connections', it will automatically be set to default and should connect at the computer startup. If it does not connect automatically.go to 'change order of prefered networks' and put your prefered network on top and set to automatically.

On many laptops, there is an external switch to turn the wi-fi on/off. This is normally found on the front or sides of the laptop case. It can be easy to turn off the wi-fi accidentally if you grab your laptop a certain way that causes you to press the switch.
On some laptops, you will find the wi-fi on/off switch by raising the laptop screen to expose the keyboard. The switch may often be found by looking at the area above the keyboard. In almost every case, the wi-fi on/off switch will be lit if the wi-fi is on, and unlit if the wi-fi is turned off.
In Device manager, check there are no yellow exclamation marks next to the networking devices, this would show that the computer has a problem with the card Remove the inspection hatch at the bottom of the laptop, check if the Black (main) and white (aux) leads are snapped onto the brass posts of the card..firmly. Repost if no luck, It does sound like a failing card to me
